Hello! My name is Ty and I am a first-year medical student at the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine. I scored a 526 (100th percentile) on the MCAT and have been one of the top tutors at 1 Source Medicine for the past year and a half. I also recently graduated from BYU with a degree in microbiology. Since I started tutoring, I have worked with traditional and non-traditional students of all levels. I have experience teaching hundreds of students one-on-one as well as in large classes through my work at 1 Source Medicine. In fact, I have designed most of the chemistry classes that are now used by the company.
I have extensive experience with the material on the MCAT, but the most valuable thing I can offer is my knowledge about how to integrate that into real score improvements. Knowing facts is not enough, you really need to know how to take the test! I believe in not only teaching the material, but teaching how to answer those hard questions with limited information. After working with dozens of students one-on-one, I can safely say that most of them achieve at least a 15-point improvement from their diagnostic scores.
My teaching philosophy is that every student learns a little bit differently and every student should start their MCAT studying with a plan that’s right for them. Every study plan should include an efficient content review phase, spaced repetition, and ample time for practice. I hope to work with you to create a study plan that will help you feel empowered to tackle the MCAT and also hold you accountable when things get hard. The MCAT journey is not easy, but with the right tools and learning strategies, anyone can get a score they’re proud of.
I also have extensive experience doing admissions advising, essay editing, and interview prep. I have tutored several students through the entire process of studying for the MCAT and applying to medical schools and many have gotten into their top choices!
