I received A's in both semesters of organic chemistry as well as the organic chemistry labs and I am currently preparing to apply for my PhD in Biochemistry. My two years of tutoring experience at the Florida Institute of Technology have been focused on making confusing concepts seem simple by breaking them down into more manageable pieces. I specialize in aiding students in nailing down the basic components of this subject so that they remain confident as the course becomes more complex. As an example of this efficiency: I tutored a failing student before his final exam; with just 3 tutoring sessions he was able to gain the confidence to understand the concepts that had confused him all semester. He received a passing grade in the class and now feels comfortable advancing to biochemistry.
Being introduced to organic chemistry can be a shock for some students. Coming out of general chemistry with expectations of what this infamous class has in store, many students find themselves lost when introduced to these abstract concepts. Tutoring in preparation for the class will allow students to be confident and feel prepared going into lectures and exams. I remember feeling overwhelmed at the beginning of organic chemistry because I had to balance my studies with my extracurriculars. This led to my philosophy of comprehending the basics to build a solid knowledge base. I also encourage students approaching organic chemistry 2, biochemistry, or molecular biology to review the basics of organic chemistry for deeper understanding.
