Salvēte, omnēs! My name is Kristie Keller Jones. I am a patient and enthusiastic private tutor specializing in languages and social sciences. I have many recommendation letters from satisfied parents attesting to my dedication to my students. My background studies in linguistics have led me to form my own approach to tutoring: I frequently share the etymology of words with my students, which helps them to form associations as they learn new vocabulary, and engages their interest as linguists-in-training! I have taught grades K-12 in a range of subjects at BASIS Charter School in Prescott, Arizona, and I currently work part-time as an 8th grade English/Language Arts teacher.

I have a B.A. in History from UCLA, where I studied Roman History, Greek History, and Byzantine History. I also took a course on Women's History in the Ancient Mediterranean. I completed three years of Latin and two years of Ancient Greek, as well as Italian, which I put to use in Rome and at Pompeii. My senior project was a paper on Classical Linguistics--specifically on Vulgar (common) Latin and its descendants, the Romance languages--which was selected as the sole project in the class to be presented at the May 2014 meeting of the UCLA Classical Society. I even worked as a research associate, assisting Dr. Amy Richlin with proofreading and fact-checking parts of her manuscript. You can view my name printed in the acknowledgements (page xii) in her book, "Slave Theater in the Roman Republic: Plautus and Popular Comedy".

I earned my M.A. in Classics at the University of Chicago. There I took another year of Greek and another year of Latin, among other courses. I received a high pass on the Latin Reading Exam, which qualified me to teach undergraduate courses. I also passed a French reading exam and completed a course on reading German for research purposes. My master's thesis was on marriage and dowries in Ptolemaic Egypt, and I continue to research the status of women in antiquity in my free time.

Knowledgeable and patient

My son really enjoyed his first lesson! He said Kristie explains things really clearly. He is in a more advanced Latin class at school, trying to catch up to his peers.

Great tutor!

Kristie is a wonderful tutor. One of our kids has to catch up to the rest of her class in Latin having joined a new school halfway through the year. Kristie's knowledge and teaching skills are excellent and she kept the class fun and interesting.

Excellent Latin tutor

My daughter finds lessons with Kristie extremely helpful and, at the same time, very enjoyable. A very patient and very knowledgeable tutor. I would very much recommend Kristie for all your Latin needs.

Fantastic tutor who can change pace as needed

Delighted with this tutor! She is able to cover lots of ground quickly and expertly. She is also flexible and can book on a dime. An excellent resource. We will be using her regularly!

Knowledgable and Engaging

Kristie was the most accommodating tutor to me this summer. I was preparing for a latin exam and Kristie provided me with not only additional pdfs, assignments, and readings but also taught me a lot. I could not recommend her enough; she really cares about her students and wants them to succeed and will go at any length to make that happen. Thank you Kristie!
