Hi! My name is Amy Schor. I have a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Physical Education and Classroom Teaching and a Masters degree in Elementary Education and Curriculum. I was a teacher for 13 years working with elementary age students K-6. I was also on the teaching board of curriculum for 3 years. I retired from teaching to become a tutor. I did so because I wanted to be able to work 1 on 1 with students because teachers don't get enough time in the classroom to do so with students that need this. This is where you are able to see strengths and weaknesses of each student and be able to figure out means to assist them. I’ve been tutoring for about 7 years now.
I use the common core curriculum, so as to follow the classroom formats. In math I show students a variety of approaches to come up with the same answers, due to struggling with the way the students are learning the concept in school. Learning different ways to come up with the same answer helps students to understand the concepts easier. When it comes to reading, I use several unique strategies to help in this complicated and large subject matter of English. I specialize in phonics, sight words, syllables, combination sounds, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, comprehension, writing skills, and much more. Even though the curriculum no longer includes cursive, I also specialize in teaching this for 3rd-5th grade, by request.
I’m a very kind and concerned teacher that believes in having time to work with students one in one. I’m very patient, positive, and nurturing. I become concerned and compassionate when students are struggling with concepts of learning various subject matter. I believe in face-to-face learning, not online tutoring, to be able to watch the physical nature of each student, for knowledge and understanding of the subjects.
I have found tutoring to be a wonderful, fulfilling, and enjoyable experience! I meet you one day soon.

Common Core

Common Core

Common Core are standards that are set standards for K-12 teachers have to follow as it pertains to subjects of math and English (Language Arts). When teaching 1st grade, an example of a standard in math would be, "that students should be able to add and subtract within 20 by the end of 1st grade," where I used linking cubes to assist students in learning this concept. A standard, again for 1st grade student in ELA is, "that students should be able to decode one syllable words at the end of 1st grade," where students would be partnered up. I would give them a list of 1 syllable words to work with and they would have to pick a word out of the list and then say it, spell it, and then use it in a sentence where it would make sense in the context of the sentence to demonstrate their understanding of the meaning of the word.

I am a certified teacher that allows me to teach K-8. Due to only teaching through 6th grade, I only feel comfortable tutoring through 6th grade. I also have a Master’s degree in Elementary Education and Curriculum.

My name is Amy. I’m from the Wyzant Co. I was a teacher until 7 years ago when I retired. I’ve been tutoring since then. I have a BS in Elementary Classroom Teaching and then went on to get my Master’s degree in Elementary Education and Curriculum. I worked on the curriculum staff at my last school for 3 years. I’ve taught 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades. I find tutoring very rewarding assisting children succeed in school. Working one-on-one with a child assists one in finding the childs needs, as well as their strengths. I tutor K-6. I have worked with students that have ADHD and learning disabilities, as well. With my past experience and qualifications, I have helped many children become successful. If given the chance I can help your child succeed, too. I prefer to come to your home to tutor, where there are less distractions from the public. I look forward to hearing from you.
