Hello! My name is Kaitlin. I graduated summa cum laude from the University of Arizona Online Campus with a bachelor's degree in Information Science and eSociety, with a minor in history; I transferred there from Phoenix College, where I graduated with an Associate of Arts in History.
My original plan with my degree was to go on and obtain a Master's Degree in Information Science, but when I began substitute teaching I had to change my plans. The core reason behind why I wanted to become a librarian, archivist, or museum curator is that I love to learn and I love to help others learn. All three of those can do that. But being a high school substitute teacher made me realize that not only do I love to learn and help others learn, I love to interact with students in the capacity of a teacher, and not just simply facilitate resources for others to learn through or with. My specific turning point was when I was helping a student through questions on a worksheet left by the teacher and saw them get excited as they started to really get it—with my help.
In addition to planning to take the Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessment for history, I also intend to take the assessments for biology, earth science, and English language arts. I am currently in the process of completing coursework to earn an SEI endorsement.
I've only been a substitute teacher since February, but my tutoring experience goes back much farther. Starting in middle school, I would tutor my peers, underclassmen, and even a handful of older students. In my junior year of high school, I joined a program where I would take an EDU 101 class, and in return, I would tutor freshman ELL students during their English language development time. After high school, I continued to tutor, this time through an online community that I eventually ended up moderating. I still both tutor people from this community and moderate it to this day.
