Adobe Flash

Adobe Flash

I have been using Flash/Animate since 1994 and have been teaching 2D animation and game design since 2006. I have taught Flash/Animate online with single students and also in collaborative groups to complete a full animation project. My animation studio is a maker space open to the public and has facilitated many animation and game design projects over the past decade and more.
Adobe Illustrator

Adobe Illustrator

I have been using Adobe Illustrator since 1993 and have been teaching vector illustration since 2006. With experience in a wide range of applications for vector art I am ready to tackle any project from Print and web to animation, large format and 3D printing, cartography, illustration and more.
Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop

I have been using Adobe Photoshop since 1993 and have worked in various industries doing large format print production, photo colorization, color correction and touch-up. I have been teaching Photoshop for 7 years and I have lessons for any application from Web Design and print setup to using pixels for fun artistic projects like Digital Scrapbooking, Digital Painting and Illustration.
Animation

Animation

I opened my animation studio as a maker space to host Animation Summer Camps in 2006. Since then I have designed curricula for schools and libraries that use Animation as an outlet to learn STEM related subjects blended with the Arts. Animation has something for everyone and includes all the Arts; like storytelling, acting, writing, music, drawing, illustration and 3D modeling. When possible I like to incorporate hands-on learning using LEGO and clay to create stop motion animation. Then we translate those skills onto the computer to work with digital tools that help bring animation to life.
Blender

Blender

With over 40 years of experience using 2D & 3D vector software I have developed a complete STEAM curriculum that encompasses learning all aspects of Blender including modeling, sculpting, shading, rigging, animation, compositing, video editing, physics, game design and more. I have fun projects that encourage students to work above their ability regardless of experience level or age and include 3D printing, CNC manufacturing, woodworking and architectural design in my background as well as traditional arts, storytelling, composing music, foley art and voice acting.
Drawing

Drawing

I have been teaching life drawing and rendering since 2004. I use the Loomis Method to help students bring their drawing skills to the next level. Many students know how to draw faces in one way. I use this popular drawing method to show how to draw the head from different angles, how to draw features of the face, likes eyes, nose and mouth; and how to draw the muscles and bones that make up difficult things to sketch like hands and posture. This enables students to expand their knowledge of life drawing and also how to imitate cartoon styles, create their own styles and different creatures. I also include drawing in perspectives, shading, and different rendering techniques like pencil, ink, watercolor, etc.
Graphic Design

Graphic Design

I am a CG Generalist with a 30 year career in graphic design that has run the gamut of everything from CAD and 3D printing to industrial manufacturing, 3D modeling and product simulation to web and video game design, from large architectural installations to printing business cards. With this experience and insight I provide lessons in Design Fundamentals, Color Theory, Typography, Drafting and Rendering. These are an essential part to my curriculum that I have been teaching since 2009 because they focus on the foundation that enhances a students' artistic skills as well as underlying concepts to develop any kind of graphic design application across industries.
Music Production

Music Production

My music production background dates back to the 1980's with synthesizers and reel-to-reel recording equipment. Since then I have worked behind the scenes doing live audio for stage sound and monitoring, live and studio multi-track recording, multi-track editing and mastering as well as producing music CDs, live internet radio and scores for animation, film and even audio books for children. For the past 8 years I have been teaching music production using MIDI and synthesizers that easily allows you to make music on your computer using a keyboard, or even record your musical instruments with microphones and track them to make a whole song. I am familiar with a variety of DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) like Garage Band, Ableton Live, Fruity Loops, VCV Rack, Audacity and many others.
Painting

Painting

I have been painting in several media since 1990 and my favorite is Water Color, but I also enjoy Acrylic, Oil and Pastels. There's also digital painting that can be done using PhotoShop and 3D software like Blender to paint models. I have been teaching a water color painting class for the past 7 years which also incorporates some sketching, pen and ink, perspective rendering, calligraphy and various fun painting techniques. I have fun, simple lessons that anyone can learn and apply to their own projects. I am open to providing similar lessons for any other medium you may be interested in painting with from traditional brush and paints to working with digital tools.
Video Production

Video Production

I have 20+ years experience filming multi-camera and audio productions for live music videos, live game shows, and doing video editing and compositing for commercials, animations, cartoons, 3D simulations, interactive learning, instruction videos and presentations. My curriculum involves teaching students to use Adobe Premiere and Blender for their animation and cartoon projects and I have been doing this since 2007. The lessons include framing a shot, lighting, green screen, camera effects, syncing audio, editing and transitions.

Jay makes things happen!!

I am very grateful to Jay for helping me with an animation class that I was required to take but had no experience with. Jay is really easy to talk to and work with and I was really impressed with his patience, skill, high standards, and creativity. I truly had no idea what I was doing, was very short on time, and was worried about passing my class. By the time Jay and I were done, I had an awesome animation video I could proudly turn in and some new Adobe skills! Thanks, Jay!

Tutor responded:

Micah, thank you for this terrific review; it's greatly appreciated. My PATIENCE comes from working with young students, the SKILLS come from using this software for 30 years, the HIGH STANDARDS because I am a perfectionist and I expect my students to work above their ability and the CREATIVITY because I believe everyone has it within themselves to express their ideas with artistic storytelling tools. You truly stepped-up and met the challenge. Animation is a lot of work and you persevered. Congratulations!

Excellent Blender and FL Studio Tutor!

Jay is an exceptional Blender tutor—patient, engaging, and incredibly encouraging. My 10-year-old son started as an absolute beginner, and thanks to Jay’s guidance, he now looks forward to every lesson and has already started building basic 3D models. Jay’s teaching style makes complex concepts easy to understand, and he creates a supportive learning environment that keeps my child motivated. Given all these great qualities, my son has also started learning FL Studio with Jay with equal engagement. Highly recommend him for anyone looking to learn Blender, whether you're a beginner or looking to advance your skills!

Teacher like mindset

He is a decent tutor. I think I had a different opinion on how things were going to go. I was looking for someone to straight to the point to help me with a particular subject. He recognized that there were some fundamentals that I was missing as far as blender goes which put him into full on teaching mode. His style of teaching the basics is veteran level but also seemed like he was use to teaching children. I felt like I was being tested regularly which took up a bit of time. I am someone that if you just explain quickly and get to the point I will learn so it went slower than I’d hoped for. I’m not sure how capable he is of advanced animation such as physics simulation properties as he got held up a bit on the one thing I wanted to actually be able to do. he mentioned that he understands one property wellbut not the others. Then gravitated towards wanting to teach me that when I had little interest in it. He also mentioned that he only understood a single particular aspect of geometry nodes. If you are in school wanting to learn the basics of blender then I would suggest him especially if you have children trying to learn. There was a lot of stalling and unsure if it was him stalling for time as at the end he was salesman style pushing for more lessons with me or if he just had a hard time or if that’s just his speed. This is not a negative review it is more of constructive criticism

Tutor responded:

The "teacher-like mindset" comes from having been writing curricula and teaching Blender since 2007. Yes, I have taught children as young as 6 yo and also adults 60+. I have worked in high school classrooms and in Universities with graduate students of Architecture. Over 30 years... I have done it all! I am certainly capable of teaching to any level of learning. Sometimes it takes a session or two of communication to learn how a student prefers to learn and to go at the pace that works for them. I have incredible patience for this process. It requires empathy and understanding. In order to disuade any implication that I may be wasting my student's time by "stalling"; what I am doing in this moment is planning three or four steps ahead. Like someone might stratergize during a chess match. An important skill to implement into any Blender workflow.

Friendly and knowledgeable

Jay is thorough in his teachings and brings joy and levity towards things he teaches (in my case Audacity). I highly and extremely recommend him for whatever you need taught because he's more than worth the money and time invested.

Great Start!

Due to technical issues, we couldn’t have a complete session. However, he was a patient tutor and provided an opportunity for me to get to know him and provide him an overview of my goals so that our time would not be wasted. I appreciate the flexibility.
