About Adam

I am my best self in the classroom. Teaching is something that drives me to bring out the very best in my students while making me more articulate, patient and attentive. There is nothing more enjoyable than helping a student deepen their content knowledge while expanding their communication skills.

I have a PhD in World History, an MA in modern Japanese history and a BA in English Literature and Philosophy. I've been a teacher throughout my studies. I've taught Japanese, History and English (including ESL) at all levels, from kindergarten to university, online and in-person, in the United States and abroad. I've also been tutoring since I was in high school, working in tutoring labs, writing centers and organizations specializing in test-preparation and college admission.

I design tutoring sessions around your learning goals. Tell me what you're working on or want to learn and I will develop an approach that fits perfectly with those needs. If you're looking for a tutor who will actively listen and modulate instruction based on you, please write.

Japanese Qualifications

I've been engaged in academic Japanese-language research and education for almost a decade. But before that, I studied the language on my own, enough to test out of lower-level college courses. As a result I'm familiar with a wide range of materials, approaches and methods that I would be happy to share with you.

World History Qualifications

I have a PhD in the field, with over 45 graduate-level credit hours in preparation. I've taught the AP, or college-level equivalent, more times than I can count and continue to teach it now. I also grade for the College Board annually and have worked on now-published AP-approved materials.

English Language, Literature, Writing and Proofreading Qualifications

I completed 42 course hours in language, literature and composition classes. After graduating, I taught English Literature and Language/Composition grades 9-12, honors and AP. I've also tutored reading and writing for over a decade, served as an external reviewer for a peer-reviewed journal in History, and have several publications of my own.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I've taught American History at the high school and college levels for over ten years, including standard and AP courses, or their equivalent.

European History

One of my areas of expertise is modern European history and I research the field intensively. I've been teaching the subject for almost a decade.

Literature

I have a BA in English Literature, with emphases on Metaphysical Poetry and Literary Crit. very knowledgeable tutor

Adam was a huge help to my son who is a sophomore in High School taking an online Japanese class. He gave my son resources to help him, led him in a positive direction. I'm sure after the holiday break we will be using Adam again. Thank you so much for giving my son some hope in his class.
