About Adam

I have a strong basis in the humanities and social sciences. I completed a BA in English Literature and Philosophy, with minors in Sociology, History and Religion. I have an MA in modern East Asian history and I'm finishing a PhD in World History now.

I've been a teacher for more than ten years. I've taught various subjects, including Japanese, History and English (including ESL) at all levels, from kindergarten to university. I've taught online and in-person, in the United States and abroad. I've been tutoring, however, since I was a student and have enjoyed my time working in tutoring labs, writing centers and organizations specializing in test-preparation and college admission. So whether it's an introductory or advanced course, I look forward to learning with you.

I design tutoring sessions based upon your learning goals. Provide me with the assignment on which you're working or explain the skills you're looking to develop and we will focus there. Alternatively, if you're looking for tutor-led instruction, I develop lessons around your subject or language goals and cater content to your interests. If you're looking for a tutor who will actively listen and modulate instruction based on what you need and want, please write.

Japanese Qualifications

I've completed graduate-level course-work in Japanese and passed a translation exam. But before that, I studied on my own. I learned enough Japanese to test out of lower-level courses; and if that applies to you, I would be happy to show you how to do the same.

World History Qualifications

I have completed doctoral-level qualifying exams in the subject, with over 45 graduate-level credit hours in preparation. I've taught the (AP or college-level) course over twenty times, and continue to teach it now. In addition, I have worked on now-published AP-approved instruction materials and have graded for the College Board over several years.

English Language, Literature, Writing and Proofreading Qualifications

I completed 42 course hours in literature and composition classes for my undergraduate degree. I've taught English Literature and Language/Composition grades 9-12, honors and AP. I've also tutored reading and writing for over a decade. In terms of proofreading/editing, I am an external reviewer for a peer-reviewed journal in History.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I've taught American History at the high school and college levels for over ten years, including standard and AP courses, or their equivalent.

European History

One of my areas of expertise in my doctoral studies is modern European history and I research the field for my dissertation. I've taught European history at the undergraduate level for about six years now and read in and about it constantly.

Japanese

I've completed graduate-level course-work in Japanese and passed a translation exam. But before that, I studied on my own. I learned enough Japanese to test out of lower-level courses; and if that applies to you, I would be happy to show you how to do the same.

Literature

I have a BA in English Literature, with emphases on Metaphysical Poetry and Literary Crit. Since graduating I have taught English Literature and Composition at the high school level, grades 9-12, including honors and AP courses. I have designed and taught courses in American, British and World Literature.

Proofreading

In terms of proofreading/editing, I am an external reviewer for a peer-reviewed journal in History.
