Hi there! My name is Kalyn and I love to teach, meeting students where they are and pushing them towards growth, confidence, and independence. My education, years of experience, passion for the craft, and passion for students have now guided me into the private tutoring world.

I have a double degree in Secondary Education and English Literature from GCU and eight years of experience in education through being a high school teacher, tutor, and director of education. As a high school teacher, I taught Freshman English, Advanced Freshman English, Creative Writing, and Speech (public-speaking, not speech–language pathology). As a tutor, I've instructed students ages pre-k to college in homework support, ELA, test-prep, and math through Algebra 2. As a director of education, one of my responsibilities was monitoring curriculum and student progress, working with families to create custom learning plans and modifications. I love children and love education, always striving to meet students where they are and help them achieve their goals!

Other facts about me: I am a mom of a beautiful three-year-old girl, a wife, a Christian, and an owner of two adorable cats! Originally from Tucson, I have lived in Phoenix ever since moving here for GCU.

I love learning and teaching about the Bible! When I was four, I accepted Christ. Ever since then, I have pursued Jesus and spent time learning about him in church, private Christian education, and private mentors. I am fairly familiar with the stories and lessons of the Bible, and it is my joy to interpret and lean on the Lord for connections and revelation in the text. Of course he is the most important aspect to any Bible lesson, but he helps those who are hungry for understanding.

For two years I was a director and tutor at Sylvan Learning Center, where I taught elementary students in reading, writing, math, study skills, and homework support in many subjects. For beginning readers, I taught phonemic awareness and phonics for decoding skills, guiding toward fluency. For ELA students, I taught comprehension, vocab, and writing, guiding students in ideas, details, organization, sentence formation, conventions, etc. For math students, I taught pre-k level all the way through Pre-Algebra, using manipulatives when needed. For study skill students, we discussed organization, note-taking, test-taking strategies, etc.
