Hello! My name is Joseph Trent, and I have been a mathematics educator for nearly 20 years. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Education (Secondary Mathematics) from Northern Arizona University in 2005 and hold a valid Arizona teaching certificate for Secondary Mathematics (grades 7–12). My certification qualifies me to teach middle school and high school mathematics, and my primary areas of expertise are Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Geometry.
Throughout my teaching career, I have worked with students in grades 7–12 in traditional classroom settings, helping learners with a wide range of abilities and learning styles. I have spent many years teaching Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Geometry, giving me extensive experience helping students master foundational concepts while preparing them for more advanced mathematics. In addition to classroom instruction, I have worked one-on-one with students who needed extra support, helping them improve their understanding, increase their confidence, and raise their grades.
My teaching philosophy centers on building confidence through understanding. I believe students are most successful when they understand the reasoning behind mathematical concepts rather than simply memorizing procedures. I break complex problems into manageable steps, identify gaps in foundational knowledge, and adapt my instruction to each student's individual learning style. My goal is to help students become independent problem-solvers who feel confident tackling challenging math problems on their own.
One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching is seeing students experience those "light bulb" moments when a difficult concept finally makes sense. I enjoy helping students overcome math anxiety, build a strong mathematical foundation, and develop the skills they need to succeed not only in their current course but also in future classes and career paths.
