Bio

I worked within a charter school network in Phoenix from 2014-2019. I taught Latin I, Latin II, and Intro Literature and Composition in the classroom setting. During my final year, I remediated three Latin classes by teaching them a year's worth of content in the last quarter of school. I condensed the content into interactive packets, making sure the content was both easily accessible and enjoyable. Despite the class being turned into a pass/fail, each class's average was a B or higher...

Despite the class being turned into a pass/fail, each class's average was a B or higher because I facilitated an environment in which the students wanted to learn. I greatly enjoy getting to know my students as I believe it is key to building trust and, ultimately, their success within the course.

Additionally, I worked as a Special Education Assistant for three years. I provided one-on-one and small group instruction to narrow the performance gap between special education students and their general education peers. I mainly worked with middle school students and gained knowledge of all of their subject areas. I also addressed issues of executive functioning through honing skills of organization, planning, and accountability.

My main passion in education is helping students learn how THEY best learn. No two students are the same and yet classes are often taught in such a way that appeal to only one manner of learning. It makes me sad when students do not feel smart simply because they are being taught in the way that does not work for them. I like to try different study skills during my sessions to see which works best for each student.

I graduated from ASU's post-baccalaureate Speech-Language Pathology Assistant program in December 2020.

I am excited to get to know you and help you learn the skills to succeed!

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I completed ASU's post-baccalaureate Speech-Language Pathology Assistant program in December 2020. During this time, I learned the tools to help autistic individuals with both their academic and recreational pursuits. Prior to this certificate, I worked within the school setting as a 504 Coordinator and Special Education Assistant (in addition to being a Latin and English teacher). My combined experiences has prepared me to help autistic individuals of all ages.

I have studied Latin since I was a 7th grade student (over 15 years ago!). I continued my studies at Kenyon College in Ohio before returning to teach. I enjoy teaching Latin I and Latin II while helping students hone their general study skills.

Middle school and high school are important times for students to discover how they learn best. Excellent Tutor, kind and compassionate

Tess has been very encouraging to my son, and has helped him break through his block so that he can learn the Latin concepts. She has used a variety of methods that work well for my son, to change things up and make the lessons interesting. We are very grateful for her!

great experience working with Tess

My daughter, junior in high school, started in-person with Tess and then COVID-19 hit. At our request Tess moved lessons online and was a tremendous help to my daughter navigating online learning and helping her stay focused on timeline submission of assignments and improving her grades. Tess is great with detail post-tutoring details and I especially appreciate the frequent parent updates. We look forward to working with Tess in the fall.

Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor

Tess is helping me with my literature assignments. I didn't really know what to expect but she quickly provided feedback on prior assignments and outlined what my improvement goals should be. Her feedback on my papers included my strengths and my weaknesses. She explained things in a clear manner. Looking forward to the next tutoring session.
