Bio

Hi! I'm Jack. I study Spanish and Environmental Studies at Dartmouth. I'm fluent in Spanish, and I scored a 36 on both the ACT English and Reading sections, and a 34 on the science section my sophomore year. That's why I tutor these four areas: I've done the work at and beyond the level my students are trying to reach. I take great pride in my students reaching their goals in these areas.

Hi!

I've tutored middle and high school students, both one-on-one and in small groups. In Spanish, I take students from novice through native, which means I'm constantly adjusting how I teach. A beginner needs vocabulary tied to things they actually talk about and enough repetition that conjugation becomes automatic. A more advanced student needs practical texts, harder tenses like the subjunctive, and correction aimed at fluency. My intention with all of my Spanish students is that their vocabulary and grammar become automatic using Dartmouth's Drill Method, freeing up space for improvement in fluency and writing.

For the ACT, I teach repetition and confidence. The English section rewards knowing why a sentence is wrong intuitively, so I walk students through the grammar and punctuation rules the test keeps repeating, then have them explain the fix back to me. Reading comes down to pacing and evidence: I teach students to map a passage fast and develop the confidence to finish with plenty of time to spare. Science is all about cutting through the chaff and gaining speed. I track my students' mistakes and make sure to drill problem areas. My goal is for all of my students to be confident completing each section twice within the allotted time so that the actual exam becomes second nature come test day.

Approved Subjects

ACT English

ACT English

I scored a 36 on ACT English, and I teach it with a focus on rules, patterns, and speed. The section recycles the same grammar and punctuation patterns every time, so I make students learn why a wrong answer is wrong and explain the fix back to me until the logic sticks. Across 4+ years tutoring middle and high school students on this exact section, I've found the score almost always comes from cleaning up a few recurring mistakes. By the time we finish, students know the rule that makes it right and are more than confident enough to finish the section twice over in the time allowed.
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

I scored a 36 on ACT Reading, and learned the whole thing comes down to pace and evidence retention. Most students lose points because they run out of time or answer from memory instead of the passage, so I teach them to map a text quickly and pull every answer straight from the page using annotation and reading techniques. I track which passage types and question formats trip a given student up, then drill those until the pattern clicks. Reading rewards a repeatable process, which I have found to be extremely coachable. My goal is for students to finish all passages and questions with at least 1/4 time remaining, allowing for revision of circled questions and confidence ending the section.
ACT Science

ACT Science

ACT Science rewards reading data quickly and jumping to the questions, not recalling biology or chemistry. Almost every question hands you a graph, table, or experiment summary and asks you to reason straight from it, so I teach students to attack the questions before the figures and pull the answer from the data instead of second-guessing with outside knowledge or wading through long passages with irrelevant information. I coach the timing hard, because the section is beatable once you stop reading every word and start hunting for the one variable each question points at. Across 4+ years of tutoring, the biggest score jumps come when a student quits treating it as a science test and starts treating it as careful, quick reading that rewards jumping to the questions. I scored a 34 as a sophomore in high school without advanced knowledge of the topics simply by crossing out the chaff.
Environmental Science

Environmental Science

I major in Environmental Studies at Dartmouth, where my coursework runs from environmental law to the science of how ecosystems, energy, and human systems actually interact. That's the same ground the Environmental Science curriculum covers, so I can tie the units students memorize, population dynamics, biogeochemical cycles, pollution, climate policy, to why they matter and where they show up in the real world. My own focus is sustainable land use and energy, which is why I teach the material as a set of connected systems rather than a vocabulary list. I've tutored for 4+ years, and I'm good at cutting a dense topic down to the handful of ideas a student actually needs to hold onto.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I write constantly as a Dartmouth student, analytical essays, personal statements, and creative work, and I carry a 3.93 GPA doing it. In addition to a highly effective CommonApp essay, I scored a 36 on ACT English, so grammar, sentence structure, and flow are second nature, but I care more about teaching students to build an argument than to fix commas. I teach essays the way I write them: figure out what you're actually trying to say, then cut everything that isn't doing work. Whether it's a college application essay or a literature paper, I help students land on a clear thesis and a real voice instead of the vague, over-formatted writing that graders skim right past.
Spanish

Spanish

I'm fluent in Spanish and major in it at Dartmouth, where I read Cervantes, García Márquez, and other Classics in the original and write literary analysis in the language. I've worked with every level, from a middle schooler conjugating their first verbs to advanced students working through the subjunctive and unedited texts. My method changes by level: beginners get vocabulary tied to how they speak and enough repetition that grammar and vocabulary begin to feel automatic, while advanced students get pushed on tense, register, and fluency. My tutoring has shown me that most students stall at the same handful of spots, so I find those fast and drill them.
