As an experienced educator I believe that every student can be successful in math, it is simply my job to break it down in a way the student can understand. As a child myself, I attended Montessori school where I was taught math with a very hands on and visual approach. As a result I still think of mathematics that way and have found many students are visual learners as well. Therefore, most of my teaching approach starts with the how or the why to build reasoning, then goes into a guided lesson, and finishes with practice to ensure students have grasped the content. Of course I also monitor student understanding throughout the lesson as adapt as needed. My goal as a teacher is to not only help the student solve the problem correctly, but to build mathematical reasoning so they continue to be successful in current and future courses.
In terms of my background, I graduated from Sonoma State University in 2009 and have Missouri teaching certificates in Early Childhood Education B-3, Elementary 1-6, Math 5-9, and Math 9-12. During my student teaching I taught kindergarten, 1st grade, 4th grade, and fifth grade. After graduation I tutored in person for one year including elementary math, algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2, SAT prep, and ASVAB prep. Then I taught high school math in the classroom for four years including pre-algebra, algebra 1, geometry, ACT prep, Intro to Stats, and a special education math skills course. I am also currently a student at the University of Missouri to earn my Masters in Mathematics Education.
