I was brought up in a Spanish-speaking home and while learning English in elementary school, I lost my ability to speak Spanish, so as an adult, I chose to re-learn Spanish. I have a Bachelor's degree in Spanish, a Master's degree in English as a Second Language, and in June, I will complete my dissertation and earn a degree-Doctor in Education Leadership. I have been teaching Spanish for over 24 years (K-12), as well as have had wonderful opportunities teaching English to students (k-12) while employed at different schools in Ohio, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. My doctoral thesis focuses on Heritage Language Learners and learning Spanish as a heritage language. I am proud to say that I will always be a student and a teacher.
I have dedicated my life of learning and teaching language to my parents, Julia Z. and Jesus Z. Although they are together in heaven, still eternally in love, they have been with me throughout my journey and will continue to be until I reunite with them. They have given me the clarity of mind, courage of heart, and strength of spirit to accomplish my dream of treasuring my own linguistic and cultural inheritance, as well as advocating for the preservation and the honoring of everyone’s birthright to speak their heritage language.
