Hello. My name is Jennifer.
I have been working with children for over 15 years in several different capacities. I started my career as a preschool teacher, working with children with special needs. For the last 10 years, I have been working with ESL students. I worked in the school district, teaching students from kindergarten through high school who spoke little to no English. I also tutor online for elementary, high school, and college students. In my online tutoring, I help students revise essays and learn how to properly format them using APA or MLA citations.
I have a bachelor of applied science in Marriage and family psychology. The classes I took while getting this degree helped me understand how to work with people of all backgrounds and how children learn differently because of their home lives. This has given me more empathy for the students I tutor.
When it comes to helping students how to write an essay I like to use the analogy of making a sandwich. A sandwich starts with a piece of bread, mayo, then meat, mayo, and another piece of bread. An essay works the same way, the first slice of bread is the introduction paragraph, and the mayo is the thesis. The meat is the body paragraphs. the last paragraph is the conclusion with the thesis reworded (the mayo on the last slice of bread. When it is put this way it is easier for some students to remember the parts of the essay and their order.
I tutor because I derive great satisfaction from watching students' excitement when they understand things better and grow through their learning.
