While pursuing my bachelors degree I volunteered as a tutor for grade school students. I loved helping students progress through subjects such as math and language arts. I went on to assist high school students which turned into a paying position.
I developed an after school tutoring program for Title VII students to help with math. I would sit in on the classroom instruction and thought there were better ways to teach math concepts. The program worked well. The students who attended made great improvements.
There are many ways to teach subjects and each student is individual and so the methods will be tailored to what works best. Some students are visual learners for example, and so visual ways of teaching will be used. I tell stories if students are having a difficult time understanding a reading comprehension exercise. Stories are a fun way of learning.
I was a paid tutor while enrolled in my bachelor program and students liked my note-taking and how I explained things to them. I look forward to working with students who need that extra boost. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As an English tutor I will clarify and answer questions regarding written English. I will also edit, comment on, and provide constructive criticism regarding students’ written work. Where speaking is concerned, I will speak clearly and enunciate for the benefit of the student while maintaining a natural and conversational tone as necessary. Equally important, I will actively create a trusting atmosphere for the student.
