I am very passionate about mathematics, teaching, tutoring, and helping students obtain their educational and career goals. I have experience as an extremely effective educator and tutor in various educational settings, including middle school, high school, community college, college, and university settings. I have tutored for Kumon tutoring center, the University of Arizona, Northern Arizona University, Brown Mackie College, and privately. I have a Bachelor's of Science in Applied Mathematics from U of A and a Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics from NAU. I am also state certified in Arizona to teach Secondary (Grades 6-12) Mathematics and have met the requirements to obtain status as a Highly Qualified (HQ) teacher in Arizona.
My teaching and tutoring philosophy centers around reaching the highest level of understanding for students. I teach for true understanding, rather than rote memorization of skills. I enable students to become active leaners, involved in discovering why a concept is true, rather than simply providing students with a process or formula. Many students become overwhelmed by mathematics, especially when viewing the subject as memorizing rules and procedures. When students can understand why something is true, math becomes less daunting, and students obtain long term understanding, build on concepts, and relate material to the real world. With my teaching and tutoring approach, students gain self-efficacy and confidence as mathematicians.
