I'm Andrew! I graduated summa cum laude from New York University with a bachelor's degree in Religious Studies, and minors in Philosophy and Classics. After pursuing various careers (wine and beer buyer; stockbroker; college prep counselor), I later went back to school and received my juris doctrate (J.D.) from the University of Arizona where I focused my studies on environmental law and authored or co-authored several published articles on topics as wide-ranging as the ecological impacts of large-scale solar energy projects and regulatory challenges to wildfire management in the West.

For the last twenty-five years, I have periodically tutored students in many subjects but have often been sought out for help tackling the SAT and essay writing for AP exams. My method for both is straightforward: practice, practice, practice. Typically, my students see score increases of 200 or more points after just a few months when focusing on the SAT. Students also see significant improvement in their grades and AP exams when focusing tutoring on essay writing -- and, perhaps most importantly, strong writing skills translate to improved performance in college!

I love helping students achieve their academic goals. Feel free to contact me with any additional questions or to schedule a lesson.

Essay Writing

I spent 15 years in the legal field and authored or co-authored hundreds of decisions on a wide-range of legal issues. In law school, I was a national finalist and scholarship recipient for the Judge John Brown Excellence in Legal Writing Competition and winner of the Judge Thomas Tang Writing Competition. I also authored or co-authored several published articles including: "When Smoke isn’t Smoke: Missteps in Air Quality Regulation of Wildfire Smoke" (with Kirsten Engel), in WILDFIRE POLICY: LAW AND ECONOMICS PERSPECTIVE, RFF Press 2012; "Solar Energy’s Cloudy Future" (with Robert Glennon), Arizona Journal of Environmental Law and Policy, vol. 1 (2010); reprinted in The RENEWABLE ENERGY READER, Carolina Academic Press 2011; and "Protecting our Barefoots: Policy Problems in the International Wine Market," Arizona Journal of International and Comparative Law, vol. 27 (2010). I am passionate about academic writing and have helped hundreds of students over the last 20+ years to improved their academic and technical writing.

Philosophy

Philosophy

I studied Philosophy (both ancient and modern) at New York University, where I graduated summa cum laude, in 2004. I later graduated with honors from the University of Arizona, in 2011, where I received my juris doctorate. In law school, legal philosophy was one of primary areas of focus (along with environmental law). I have tutored dozens of students in philosophy over the years and, of particular importance, have helped students with their academic writing in the subject to improve test-taking and essay writing. I am passionate about philosophy and look forward to helping more students!
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

I first began tutoring the SAT while still in high school myself, over 25 years ago. Since then, I have tutored hundreds of students on the SAT and have seen average score increases well over 100 points. My approach is straightforward: practice, practice, and more practice. And, specifically, practice using real, former SAT questions. This approach builds confidence and helps students with timing and understanding the nuance of test questions.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I first began tutoring vocabulary (specifically for the SAT) while still in high school myself, over 25 years ago. Since then, I have tutored hundreds of students on vocabulary and the SAT and have seen average score increases well over 100 points. My approach is straightforward: practice, practice, and more practice. And, specifically, practice using real, former SAT questions. This approach builds confidence and helps students with timing and understanding the nuance of test questions. In addition, I teach students Latin and Greek word parts to help them intuit and learn unfamiliar words in a context-based setting.
