Practical approach to learning Japanese

Many Japanese language programs get bogged down in the theory and impractical grammatical structures, but being able to conduct simple conversations can happen without that, knowing it will all get filled in eventually. Japanese: I first gained interest in Japanese through anime, and am encouraged that many young learners are the same! I lived in Japan for 4 years, including studying at a Japanese language school full-time for 2 years. I passed the N2 level of the JLPT, but more importantly to me, have communicated with friends and Japanese teachers primarily/exclusively in Japanese. Compared to the average native Japanese speaker, I am more conscious of the differences between English and Japanese, and thus...

Highly Recommended Japanese Tutor!
Lydia has been tutoring my son throughout high school, and later worked with my daughter in college. They both loved her. As a native Japanese speaker, I was impressed by how quickly they were able to speak, write, and understand Japanese grammar, all from just one hour of tutoring each week. Explaining the "why," "when," and "how" behind language concepts can be challenging in any language, but it's particularly difficult in Japanese. Lydia was the first teacher who made these concepts and the language structure easy to grasp. She presented them in a way that allowed them to approach the language from an English-speaking perspective, which made all the difference. Lydia also helped my son with his college application essays, and thanks to her guidance, he will be studying Japanese at the university level. I can’t recommend her highly enough!" Thank you for your help!

The Perfect Blend of Knowledge and Patience!
I had been studying Japanese for approximately a year using Duolingo when I had my first lesson with Lydia. During the session, I quickly realized that my progress had not been as significant as I initially thought, as I had been relying too heavily on Duolingo's multiple-choice format. When attempting to converse with Lydia, I struggled to recall the Japanese words (If only conversations came with multiple-choice options!) I am incredibly grateful to Lydia for her patience and expertise, which have greatly enhanced my understanding of Japanese vocabulary and grammar. Choosing Wyzant and working with Lydia has been instrumental in deepening my knowledge of the complexities and beauty of the Japanese language. Thank you, Lydia!

Very helpful and knowledgeable Japanese Tutor
Lydia T. helped me with learning some basic Japanese, including all the katakana, how to introduce myself, how to use present tense verbs, how to say you like or dislike something, how to say you are good or bad at something, and how to order food at a restaurant. She also recommended to me some helpful apps and tips for living in Japan. Overall, I thought she was an excellent Japanese tutor.
