Bio

My daily job is a Senior Direct Care (Habilitation) Provider for children and young adults with developmental disabilities. Outside of my job, I tutor children from preschool to young adults in college; 3-10 hours per week and have been doing so for over 22 years. I have a BA in Human Services, an MA in Special Education and a certificate in Positive Behavior Support. Both degrees and the certificate programs taught me things which are helpful in my everyday job and in tutoring.

I believe I am an effective English tutor for several reasons. I always tell people that if I was not working my current job, I would be an English teacher. Writing, grammar, vocabulary, reading and comprehension all fascinate me. Over the years I have noticed that students often seem to be confused by what they are learning in English classes and rather than come away feeling good about what they are learning, they come away frustrated. I believe that when I spend time with them, I help them to gain a better understanding of the material.

It is important to feel good about your work and yourself. I will provide feedback and would ask that you/your parents do the same. it is important that you feel good about the tutoring I am providing you. To ensure that students have a comfortable, secure and quiet workplace, I am willing to meet in their homes, at a library or any place they feel comfortable in and is convenient for them.

I try to be flexible with time and ask that you give a few hours notice if you need to cancel or re-schedule. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you in any way I can to achieve success in your studies.

Although I have currently been in the same job for over 17 years, I have worked in several different fields and have the knowledge base to tutor people in various career fields. Also, I have been a youth minister and mentor for teens for over 20 years; as part of my duties, I have assisted them in looking and applying for jobs. The special needs clients I work with eventually all go through Vocational Rehab and I am always a part of that process with them. I have helped to develop several training programs.

Handwriting,

Handwriting

Handwriting is one of the most important areas of study for students. I make sure to take the time to encourage the students I work with to do the best they can and give them hints on how to form their writing so it looks nice. I have worked for many years with assisting students with the pincer grasp and various writing tools to help them improve.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

My educational background with study skills began in my own school days. I try to teach study skills according to the students' needs-flashcards, note-taking (Cornell is one of the best ways), highlighting keys words, phrases or sentences (if allowed), using other resources to gain a better understanding of the material. I also encourage them to ask questions and have study partners if possible.

I have helped many students in the subject of writing and in all grades. I am currently assisting 2 college students with their writing and they are both doing well. I am familiar with APA and MLA forms of writing as well as annotated bibliographies, journaling, research and writing summaries. I feel that it is important to teach students how to write in the proper tense, use a dictionary and thesaurus so that their work is unique and has a voice.

Bible Studies

Bible studies is a huge part of my life. I am a cradle Catholic, but I have also studied other religions over the years. For 4 years, I taught religious education to children ages 4-12 and for about 10 years, I was an assistant youth minister. Over the last 3 years, I have been teaching religious education to adults who are looking to enter the church. We use a variety of resources and review the history of the church in depth.
Social Studies,

Social Studies

Social studies is one of my favorite subjects. In high school and college I took the basic Social Studies and history classes as well as elective ones so that I could keep learning about the subject. I have had many opportunities over the years to be a part of various grade levels and their social studies programs; from 3rd grade to freshman/sophomores in college. Teachers have put me in charge of small groups as well as individual students to help them in their understanding of social studies.

Knowledgable and kind tutor

Suzie helped my son with his physical handwriting. The way he grips his pencil cause him pain when he's writing. Suzie came with multiple pencil grips and some ideas on how to help him. We'll definitely be using her again!

Patient and encouraging

Suzanne is helping my son with strengthening his small motor skills, like handwriting. She has gone out of her way and using her own time to purchase instruments that would enable my son to hold the pencil properly. My son likes her and enjoys his time with her, so much so that he would ask if Suzanne is coming every after school.
