About Mark

Bio

I have been teaching math and science since the 1980s. Included in my experience are elementary school, middle school, high school, and first-year mathematics in college. I specialize in all areas of mathematics, statistics, and probability at all elementary, middle school, and high school levels as well as physical science, chemistry, and physics. Currently, I teach middle school mathematics and science in Chandler.

I have been teaching math and science since the 1980s. Included in my experience are elementary school, middle school, high school, and first-year mathematics in college. I specialize in all areas of mathematics, statistics, and probability at all elementary, middle school, and high school levels as well as physical science, chemistry, and physics. Currently, I teach middle school mathematics and science in Chandler.

ACT Math

ACT Math

I have taught all levels of middle school and high school math at several local schools. I have also looked at the ACT preparation materials and have a good understanding of the subjects tested on the mathematics section of the ACT exam. I have helped a number of students prepare for the ACT, SAT, and the state and national mathematics exams.
ACT Science

ACT Science

I have taught life science, physical science, chemistry, and physics in local middle and high schools. In addition, I am a science bowl coach and science fair coordinator. By studying the recommended ACT preparation material, I am well acquainted with the subjects tested on the science section of the ACT exam.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

For the last five years, I have taught Algebra I in summer school at a middle school in Chandler. Usually, students who attend summer school have had difficulty with either Prealgebra or Algebra I. Consequently, I am well aware of the areas of algebra where students need strengthening and practice. As with all my tutoring and teaching, I attempt to bring mathematics out of the realm of abstractions into the practical arena of everyday life. I have also provided enrichment activities to those students who are excelling in algebra.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have taught Algebra 2 at a local high school. In addition, I have frequently tutored Algebra 2 at my current school for those students having difficulty with the subject. Algebra 2 provides a solid foundation for precalculus and calculus.
Calculus

Calculus

As a math major in college, I took three semesters of Freshman/Sophomore level calculus. I also took two semesters of Advanced Calculus and a semester of Vector Analysis. I have taught calculus at a local school in Gilbert, Arizona.
Chemical Engineering

I earned a bachelor of science, cum laude, in chemical engineering at The University of Toledo in December 1973. I also completed the course requirements for the PhD in chemical engineering at Arizona State University, passing the PhD comprehensive exam. I did not complete the dissertation requirement.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I have a degree in chemical engineering and have taught chemistry at a local high school. Chemistry is also part of the physical science class I currently teach at a local middle school. Over the years, I have accumulated lab equipment that is easily portable for use in home school situations.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I earned a bachelor of science, magna cum laude, in mathematics from Arizona State University in 1989. I have taken Differential Equations as a class during the regular mathematics program. During that time, I had a full semester of solving differential equations by numerical methods. My final paper for the Mathematical Modeling class included the numerical solution of a system of partial differential equations. I also have a bachelor of science, cum laude, in chemical engineering from the University of Toledo, where we used differential equations frequently in chemical reactor design, process control theory, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and mass transfer courses.

I have taught elementary and middle school for 11 years. During this time I have taken classes in the College of Education at Arizona State University on classroom management, teaching elementary science, teaching elementary mathematics, teaching language arts, and educational psychology. I have a bachelor of science, magna cum laude, in mathemtics from Arizona State University, and a bachelor of science, cum laude, in chemical engineering from The University of Toledo.

Elementary Math

I have taught fifth-grade and sixth-grade mathematics at four schools in the Phoenix area since the 1980s. Currently, I am teaching sixth-grade mathematics at a middle school in Chandler. My emphasis is on developing good number sense and problem solving ability. I motivate students by using everyday practical examples and problems from science. I also attempt to integrate the mathematics with the special interests of the student.

I have been teaching various science classes at the elementary, middle, high school levels since the 1980s. Currently, I teach a class that combines environmental, chemical, and physical science for sixth graders. I have also taught high school physics, high school chemistry, middle school earth science, and middle school life science in four schools around the Phoenix area. My emphasis is learning science through hands-on experience, whether it be studying living things or designing physical and chemical experiments.

I earned a bachelor of science, magna cum laude, in mathematics at Arizona State University in 1989. In graduate school at Arizona State University, I taught MAT 119 Finite Mathematics, MAT 142 College Mathematics, and MAT 170 Precalculus. I also tutored in the Arizona State University Math Tutor Center. For a year I taught and tutored mathematics in the Upward Bound program at Arizona State University.
Geometry

Geometry

Geometry is my favorite branch of mathematics. I have taken graduate level classes in geometry and topology, which is a related field. I have quite a few manipulatives that I have acquired over the years to help students grasp three-dimensional objects. I have also taught geometry at a local high school. Whether plane, spherical, solid, hyperbolic, or analytic geometry, I should be able to help.

I earned a bachelor of science, magna cum laude, in mathematics at Arizona State University in 1989. I earned an A in MAT 342 Linear Algebra, a B in MAT 442 Advanced Linear Algebra, an A in MAT 443 Elementary Abstract Algebra, and a B in MAT 444 Intermediate Abstract Algebra. In graduate school at Arizona State University, I taught MAT 119 Finite Mathematics, MAT 142 College Mathematics, and MAT 170 Precalculus. I also tutored in the Arizona State University Math Tutor Center. For a year I taught and tutored mathematics in the Upward Bound program at Arizona State University.

I earned an A at Mesa Community College in the Introduction to Logic class. Further, I earned a bachelor of science, magna cum laude, in mathematics at Arizona State University, which included symbolic logic in many of the mathematics courses I completed. In graduate school in mathematics, I taught MAT 142 College Mathematics that included a chapter of symbolic logic.

I minored in economics while an undergraduate, taking all required courses for graduate school. Although primarily a science and math teacher, I have taught economics at a local school and incorporated economics into my math classes. At Arizona State University, I often tutored students taking business mathematics courses that cover the many business applications of economics.

I also completed the course requirements for the PhD in chemical engineering at Arizona State University, passing the PhD comprehensive exam. I did not complete the dissertation requirement.

Philosophy

I have tutored students in philosophy at both the high school and college level, especially ethics, philosophy of science. and logic. I have also been the advisor of several high school senior thesis students who have written on justice, philosophy of religion, and philosophy of science.
Physical Science

I have taught physcial science, physics, and chemistry for many years, Currently, I teach physical science at a middle school in Chandler. My classes are filled with demonstrations and lab activities. Rather than lecture, I like to either show the students the physical concepts we are learning about or have the students discover the concepts for themselves. Consequently, I have a considerable amount of portable lab equipment that is easily transportable to any location. In the case where I cannot transport the equipment, I have numerous videos of the lab demonstrations.
Physics

Physics

I have taught physics at two high schools in the Phoenix area. Further, most of my graduate work was in mechanics while my engineering career emphasized electricity and magnetism. I worked for over twenty-three years at two major semiconductor product companies. Over the years, I have collected a large amount of hands-on equipment both for mechanics and electricity and magnetism. The best way to learn physics is to observe the physical principles in action.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I currently teach prealgebra at a middle school in Chandler. By integrating the math class with the students' current science class, both classes are reinforced, and students see that although we separate classes to focus our teaching, all the classes comprise one whole. My emphasis is bringing abstract concepts, especially the use of letters for numbers, down to everyday experiences. I use a number of hands-on activities to help students understand the mathematical world. We build actual three-dimensional models as we study surface area and volume.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I have taught precalculus at both the high school and college level to a wide range of student abilities. A good understanding of precalculus concepts, such as algebra, trigonometry, complex numbers, analytic geometry, matrices, determinants, sequences, series, and limits, prepares the student for differential and integral calculus.
Probability

Probability

Probability is one of my favorite math subjects. I have taken both undergraduate and graduate courses in probability while a graduate student in statistics. I have acquired quite a few portable manipulatives that are useful in the study of probability.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I have taught prealgebra, algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2, trigonometry, precalculus, and calculus at a local high school. By studying the recommended SAT preparation material, I am well acquainted with the subjects tested on the mathematics section of the SAT exam.
Statistics

Statistics

I was a graduate student in statistics for two years. Over the years I have taken more than a half dozen statistics courses. During my time in industry, the use of statistics has increased immensely, contibuting greatly to the increase in quality. Consequently, I have considerable experience in process and quality control and have used a number of statistics computer programs, such as JMP, R, SAS, and Minitab.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

I love trigonometry! For me it is where geometry meets algebra. I have taught trigonometry at a local high school and a nearby university. Through the years I have developed certain activities that help students understand key concepts.
