Hello! I come to tutoring with rich experience instructing diverse students and subjects. Viewing each person as uniquely gifted, I aim to identify and highlight strengths, locate areas of growth, and tailor highly individualized guidance and practice sets. I especially enjoy partnering to develop your skills in academic writing, literature, and test preparation, and offer guidance on admission essays for all educational levels. Tough topics can be both approachable and fun!

With over five years tutoring and teaching for two renowned test prep companies, I instruct AP Language and Literature, ACT, SAT, and PSAT. Some successes include: numerous 5s on AP exams; after just 6 weeks; an 8th grade student boosted his PSAT score 300+ points (99th percentile); and in a month, a sophomore with neurodiversity and test anxiety improved his ACT composite score 3 points (>95th percentile). My students have been accepted to exclusive collegiate high schools, Columbia and UC Berkeley undergrad, and MIT graduate studies, among others.

In my decade of teaching college composition, literature, creative writing, and other professional writing, I have embraced an acting motto: when we become interested, we become interesting. Choosing topics about which we are passionate yields better writing.

As an English grad student and PhD postdoctoral fellow at a private college, I partnered with undergrads, mostly in engineering and computer sciences. Tutoring and teaching the writing process extensively, I was nominated both tutoring consultant and teacher of the year. Irrespective of your English mastery, I walk alongside you to hone your unique voice.

Further, I train and empower students to navigate long-term hurdles like dyslexia (favoring Orton Gillingham methods) and ADHD (promoting multisensory learning and mindfulness). Whatever your starting point, I simplify and tailor test prep and writing strategies. Together, we'll create a plan to optimize our time and achieve your goals!

Approved Subjects

ACT English

ACT English

My most recent success involved working with a student under a tight deadline. In 4.5 weeks, we were able to increase his composite score three points overall, to the 95th percentile, and improving 4 points in Math, 4 points in English, and 3 points in Reading.
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

I have extensive experience in test preparation for the ACT, in equipping students with confidence in navigating the test and helping students achieve their ideal scores.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

In currently tutoring privately in Algebra and other test preparation math (PSAT, SAT, and ACT primarily), I aim to simplify the principles of Algebra. In efficiently imbuing students with Algebra's similarity to math with which they're more familiar and various real-world applications, I am able to reach students in their current state of math mastery and build soundly.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

I have a PhD and have completed training for understanding, identifying, screening, and evaluating for dyslexia. The training included how to intervene effectively and early for students with the learning disability, in grades Kindergarten through third grade, ideally. Systems to successfully educate students to address this unexpected difficulty in reading include the Orton-Gillingham approach which focuses on phonemic awareness and the hurdles dyslexics face in developing this essential skill, particularly as it relates to the alphabetic principle. My training further included understanding laws that support students with dyslexia, what classroom and learning accommodations are important for dyslexics, and which assistive technologies tend to work best. Studies further included how to prepare dyslexic students for independence, resilience, and success in high school, college, and in life more generally. This training also helped us develop sensitivity around comorbid conditions. I have worked successfully with several students with this unique disability amid its accompanied sea of strengths.
English

English

I have taught college level composition and literature, as well as high school English and test preparation English of all sorts with regular, exceptional success of students grades 8 through undergraduates (seniors). I can help you identify which errors you make and give you easy practice sets to help you outgrow them with ease.
Grammar

Grammar

I hold a PhD on English, am fluent in Italian, and have tutored test prep (grade school and high school), English, grammar, and all sorts of writing--from grades 2 to university undergraduates. Strong grammar, syntax, and diction are all foundational to strong writing and language fluency, all of which I enjoy teaching!
Italian

Italian

I possess a bachelor's degree in Italian Cultural Studies and am passionate about the Italian culture and how it has shaped me as a professional and as a person. I have at times translated Italian texts and tutored Italian grammar.
Literature

Literature

I hold two degrees in English literature and language, a Bachelor's and PhD, and a Master of Arts in Creative Writing. I have studied Italian classical literature in Italian, too, for instance, as well as major English classics the world over (Shakespeare, Wollstonecraft, Dubois, and so many more). It is not an understatement to say I love literature, theories surrounding it, and teaching it on a host of levels.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I have proofread myriad writings for publication and professional writing as both a doctoral student and university professor. I enjoy the editing process and seeing writing through to its polished best.
PSAT

PSAT

I have worked recently with several 8th, 9th, and 10th grade students in PSAT, in which my students have made giant leaps over short periods and maintained those gains in subsequent retests in all subject areas of the PSAT. Equipping them with streamlined skills and practice sets, I help to maximize our time, their results, and their test confidence.
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

I have worked five years tutoring and teaching students to excel on standardized exams, including the SAT, PSAT, ACT, and others.
Writing

Writing

Writing is my specialty, and I enjoy most every kind! I have tutored or taught composition, argumentation, literature, and test preparation to elementary, high school, and undergraduate creative and professional writing students. Resumes, research proposals, and instructional manuals are some examples of undergraduate professional writing for engineers and computer scientists I have taught. I also have helped students compose essays for admittance to undergraduate and graduate schools, and I have experience composing and editing press releases and magazine articles.

Outstanding tutor for top HS students studying English/Literature

I highly recommend Holly as a tutor for advanced high school students seeking to become great writers as they prepare for admission to a top college. Holly has tutored my daughter since her freshman year in advanced English/Literature courses (Honors, IB, AP). Holly creates a friendly and positive learning environment. She teaches by asking insightful questions to help students develop their writing skills and become more critical thinkers. As a parent I appreciate how Holly uses humor to keep it fun, always nice to hear laughter during the sessions. She is also flexible and has made herself available when needed during tight deadlines. My daughter plans to continue to use Holly as a thought partner when she heads to college in the Fall 2025. Thank you Holly for helping my daughter elevate her writing and become more confident interpreting and analyzing all types of Literature!

Dear Andrew, Thank you for taking the time to write this amazing review. Partnering with your family in your daughter's expansive and diverse essay topics for history, art theory, literature, psychology, and more has been an absolute delight and a privilege. I sincerely look forward to helping her hone her truly unique voice as she writes her college admissions essays and shadowing her as she transitions into college. Thank you so much for this continued opportunity.

Very knowledgeable and detail-oriented

Holly was very helpful in my daughters prep for AP Lang. she was very detail oriented and sent comprehensive notes on foliwups my daughter should do between sessions. She also reviewed content offline to provide input. My daughter really enjoyed the tutoring sessions with her and felt more confident taking her exam. Thank you Holly!

Amazing English Tutor

Our daughter started working with Holly and 9th grade and her writing improved significantly. Holly did a wonderful job supporting her yet challenging her and helping her build her skills and independence. Now she is in 10th grade and taking AP English. As our daughter’s writing has improved a lot, she has become very independent and needs to meet with Holly only occasionally.

Marina, 29 lessons with Holly
Tutor responded:

Dear Marina, Thank you so much for taking time to write this wonderful review. While your daughter has caught on with ease and enthusiasm to the tricks and tools I've shared, the whole point of my work is to make myself obsolete -- in my students' independence, control in their writing process, and understanding of literature. It is thrilling to see your daughter grow so quickly as a gifted writer and to play a small part in her academic and professional development. Thank you sincerely for that trust.

Turning HighSchoolers Grades Around in Honors Euro Lit @Highly Competitive School

Holly has put an incredible amount of care and effort into preparing lessons that target exactly what my son needs. He’s in a very challenging high school program program that actually teaching at college level, without the AP designation. His school has a writing handbook that defines the schools very specific methodology, and creating a thesis and topic sentences. She took the time to understand their expectations and grading methods in order to tailor her lessons. Her understanding of my sons gaps are at a deep level, causing every lesson to result in incredible changes in his growth. His teacher has been surprised by the improvements coming on so fast. His grades are rising back up. We expect an A, and have our fingers crossed.

Preya, 12 lessons with Holly
Tutor responded:

Dear Preya, Thank you for taking the time to write this very thoughtful, generous review. Schools at times can demand an incredible rigor of their students. While I am unable to guarantee certain scores, as such, I have cherished the opportunity to learn about how your son excels best in English literature, literary analysis, and argument, and help him communicate that understanding in formal writing. Thank you.

Phenomenal Tutor!

Holly is not only incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to outstanding writing -- she also possesses unparalleled passion and dedication with which she comes to know each student individually and bring out the unique perspectives, experiences, and strengths of each student. We highly recommend her for all English writing and language courses and college application essays, as well as ACT and SAT test prep!

Rick, 3 lessons with Holly
Tutor responded:

Dear Rick, Thank you for taking the time to write this kind review. Working briefly with your son to help him enjoy and interpret the literature for his sophomore English class was fun and helped me in what I do, too!

Student-Focused Diligent Doctorate Level Tutoring

Dr. Holly diligently tutored my son for a very challenging cumulative English exam. My son’s exam covered Romeo & Juliet, To Kill a Mockingbird, Literary/Poetry/Dramatic terms, a compare and contrast essay on Southern Gothic Literature including an obscure short story, and various types of grammar. Dr. Holly took the time to review my son’s old assessments, study guides, writing style, etc., to better help him prepare specifically for the nuances of his class dynamics and expectations. She also took the time to learn about his learning style and created games to break up their intensive work sessions. Customized homework and direction were created for my son to complete in-between sessions. She made herself highly available to our family during this crunch time and truly cared about my son’s overall well-being as we kept in touch if he was getting tired or didn’t have time to complete items due to his other studies. This tutoring request came just weeks before my son’s final exam and covered an ambitious study load. Dr. Holly dove right in and truly seemed to enjoy her work. My son was motivated to do his best for her and himself during and between sessions and learned skills that will outlast just one exam. We plan to partner with Dr. Holly long-term if she’ll have us! My observation is that Dr. Holly is a serious and passionate scholar with a temperament and skill set to work with students at many levels. Thank you!
