Hi, I'm Jillian! I graduated with a degree in Liberal Arts from St. John's College, a "great books" school with a strong reputation for teaching students how to think critically. Later, I received my Master's in Anthropology from the University of Georgia, then worked for a non-profit as a teacher for refugee and immigrant high schoolers and adults. Since my students were studying English as a second, third, or even fifth language, they often struggled with reading and writing. I came to love working with ESOL students and teaching writing, vocabulary, and reading comprehension by focusing on relatable, interesting topics. As a tutor I hope to inspire students to enjoy writing and reading more, even if English is never their favorite subject. Remember: a first draft is just that -- a draft! Even the most experienced writers start with something that isn't perfect. I believe that everyone can write competently with a little bit of help.
I have three years of experience teaching high school-aged and adult ESOL students. I have extensive writing experience and I am an official rater for the writing portion of the GRE test (please note, however, that I am not able to tutor for the GRE specifically). I have also scored standardized test essays for 8th and 11th grade and I write English Language Arts standardized test items for practice tests. In addition, I have won several prizes for essay writing from St. John's College.
I am open to suggestions and always try to respond within 24 hours. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have! Also, I'm currently working toward a 2nd Master's Degree in Fine Arts at the University of Alabama, so I am available to teach beginning drawing, painting, and elementary piano!
