Hi, my name is Sarah and I’ve been tutoring for close to a decade on Wyzant! I tutor in American History, Bible Studies, Classics, English, Essay Writing, European History, Grammar, Homeschool, Latin, Literature, Proofreading, Reading, Religion, Vocabulary, World History, and Writing. I develop my own curriculums to teach from, microblog about my tutoring subjects on IG, and would love to help your student – or yourself – reach new heights on your academic journey! I have 3 undergraduate degrees and I love to use my knowledge to encourage and bless others as well as run my tutoring business. I am a firm believer in “no child left behind” – I am rigorous in my practice, fun in my teaching, and knowledgeable about a variety of Liberal Arts subjects. I will happily teach any age – but I primarily work well with high school because of my work in Latin. I excel at one-on-one virtual tutoring with my students because of the amount of detail I am able to lovingly pour into vs. a class with a bunch of pupils, but that being said, am not against small groups of students. Let me know if you would like a session!

American History

American History

I am in depth graduate Military & American History scholar ranging from Prehistory - the Modern Age. I have trained high-school students in APUSH and college students in my own original American History curriculum for 2 years. My favorite point of time in American History is America's involvement in WW1 with General Pershing.
Bible Studies

Bible Studies

I am a devoted follower of the Lord Jesus Christ and I have both composed and led multiple Bible Studies for K-12 as well as adults (male & female) under pastoral leadership for 10+ years. For 4+ years, I have been a Worship Leader of two separate churches - Families for Christ Fellowship and Abundant Life Baptist Church - not just choosing melodies to sing from but also working one-on-one with the pastor in leading worship. One summer, I teamed up with the families of Abundant Life Baptist Church and set their Vacation Bible School (VBS) memory verses to original music for the K-12 students to memorize! I combine my love of Biblical languages - Latin first and then Hebrew - to bring out the stories behind the books of the Bible - its history, culture, and language - to explain the truth of Jesus Christ to a new generation.
Classics

Classics

Did you know that Tolkien was fluent in Latin by the time he was 12? I've taught Latin 1/2/3, Classical culture, Classical History, Ancient Mediterranean History, & Greek and Roman Mythology to students ranging from 4 years old to those who are in their 60's. I love a good nonfiction history book, a Latin translation, and trying activities that our ancestors did several hundred years ago. I frequently mix my knowledge of the Ancient Mediterranean and Classical Cultures with Tolkien's HOBBIT & LOTR series - if you want a "hands-on" approach to one of the world's favorite authors & the Classics, look no further; this class is for you!
English

English

I am an IXL Certified tutor since Jan 2024. With the help of IXL and my Latin tutoring background, I tutor in ELA - through grammar, vocab, writing, spelling, punctuation, etymology, reading comprehension, phonics & phonemes, editing & proofreading, figurative language, reference skills, and more! - so your student can confidently refine their skills in ELA, advance to the next grade, or both! I am fun, patient, friendly, knowledgeable, and always curious to find new ways to help your student indisputably conquer their academic conundrums and rise to higher heights!
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I'm an academic essay writer with 4+ years' experience in Creative Writing & English Literature and Composition. I specialize in helping your student creatively write and edit/proofread 5+ paragraph essays, especially those that are timed, persuasive, research-driven, or explanatory. Two of my student highlights doing this were 1) helping a high schooler perfect their college essay which not only helped him gain entrance into Stanford University's prestigious medical school but he was also awarded a full ride scholarship to Stanford and 2) helping a 3rd grader achieve a 7 paragraph essay by himself on how to use the 5 senses on how to better understand and describe chocolate to someone who had never experienced it before. I dissect theses, varied sentence structure, grammar, vocab, paragraphs, aid you in properly citing sources through MLA, Chicago, or APA; assist with Works Cited and annotated bibliographies, and how to avoid plagiarism to give you a well-rounded experience with writing and editing or proofreading your essay to build confidence that speaks beyond your paper and gives you the grade you deserve.
European History

European History

I take students from 1450ish CE - Present Day and we study the political, economic, social, cultural, and intellectual developments in Europe. I specialize in creating my own historical curriculums geared with the high schooler in mind to challenge and equip them to satisfactorily achieve as high a grade as possible on the final AP exam. I fill in gaps of your students' learning that their AP class may not cover and make the impossible in History possible as a MA in History with Norwich University. Anybody want a 5?
Financial Accounting

Financial Accounting

Come & see if you can crack the Financial Accounting code with me! My specialty is helping students – like yourself – understand and replicate the meaning of Accounting fundamentals – everything from debits & credits, normal balances, and the ALOE vs. ALSE equation to understanding and mastering double entry accounting, chart of accounts & types of accounts, regular journal entries, adjusting journal entries, the worksheet, t accounts, the trial balance (as well as how to catch general errors & fix them from the trial balance), general journal & general ledger, the 3 ways of applying your knowledge to Financial Accounting (Cash, Modified Cash, & Accrual), how to compose the 3 Financial Accounting Statements (Income Statement, Statement of Owner’s Equity, & Balance Sheet), the 4 different types of depreciation, the entire closing process as well as the importance of reversing entries, what the 10 crucial steps to the Accounting Cycle are & how to follow them, & how to compose and interpret Financial Accounting Ratios from your Financial Statements (ie: ROA & the Debt Ratio). I am thorough & methodical and will help you master these crucial fundamental steps so you can confidently understand and enter the Accounting world. I pull my examples from a variety of College Accounting & Principles of Financial Accounting textbooks, geared towards putting the student at the front of Financial Accounting while giving them a thorough understanding of the core Accounting principles.
Grammar

Grammar

All languages follow a common framework of parts of speech, sentence types, punctuation, mechanics, syntax, semantics, morphology, phonology, and more to create the stories that we love and cherish as students of literature or as academic scholars and researchers. I have studied grammar from elementary through high school, but I did not understand it completely until I started studying other languages, most notably Latin and Hebrew. Understanding grammar It is utterly fundamental to understanding the English language, and identifying the proper writing and speaking forms to excel at school or the professional field. If grammar is a struggle, let me demystify it for you - I use a variety of sources for a multi-faceted experience with the English language!
Homeschool

Homeschool

I've been home-schooled since the later half of 3rd grade through high-school (for 10 years) so I am familiar with the triumphs as well as the struggles of home-schooling. My approach to tutoring very much mirrors home-schooling. The parent / teacher tells me what is being covered, and then the student and I go over it in a variety of different ways. There's no one "right" way to solve a problem. Each student is different. Let me help you experience the joys of home-schooling!
Latin

Latin

I've tutored in Latin 1, 2, and 3 for 8+ years at Wyzant through both immersion-based and grammar-based textbooks. I've assisted students from 4 years old to those who are seniors in the Latin and English alphabet, pronunciation, grammar, vocab, and translations. My focus is honing a student's understanding of different Latin grammar and vocab compared with English so that the language pupil will become more well-rounded in both languages.
Literature

Literature

I'm both a bookworm & bibliophile of American, Military, World, British, Classical, English, and Comparative Literature in Latin & English and I tutor in the Academic as well as Creative Literature of these languages. I've studied and also taught Literature for 15+ years. I delight in research, literary analysis, lots of writing, taking different perspectives, writing conventions, and of course books!
Proofreading

Proofreading

The fine-tuning of a paper is always the most delicate and yet rigorous of duties where the proofreader evaluates a paper for grammar, punctuation, spelling, omitted words, repeated words, spacing and formatting, and typographical errors for example. An experienced proofreader is hard to find for their dutiful precision and lethal corrections, while retaining an in-depth understanding of the subject matter at hand. I was a former English Literature major and I devoted 4 years to studying, writing, and proofreading the English language. My precisely calculated decision-making, knowledge of Microsoft Word, background and understanding of writing in the English language will undoubtably prove to be an asset to you!
Reading

Reading

Although I am no Reading Specialist, Orton-Gillingham Expert, or Certified Teacher, I am a firm believer that there is no one "right" way to learn how to read. I have learned not only how to unlock the interwoven necessary components of phonics, graphemes, and phonemic awareness for students of all ages and backgrounds but also teach them how to replicate my methods for themselves to continue learning. I also have extensive academic background as a Latin 1-3 tutor and possess over 4+ years' experience in undergraduate English Literature and Composition so I weave in the building of vocabulary for the student a thorough understanding of English Grammar, Latin and Greek prefixes/roots/suffixes, Spelling and Writing so my students not only learn how to read but also write as the 3 foundational principles of Reading are intertwined. I am IXL certified and heavily use this educational K-12 software program in addition to my own original Reading curriculum to booster a student's Reading confidence and prepare them for the school year or the Summer!
Religion

Religion

I am a passionate Religious researcher and tutor. My study of religion has lead me through many doors - learning Latin to better study the original primary source documents of the Catholic church, studying Vietnamese to better study the Vietnam War, better understanding Sanskrit to be able to explain Latin to South Asian students while learning about their culture, learning Spanish to better tutor Hispanic students and study the Catholic religion through their Spanish religious documents, learning Hebrew to better understand the Yom Kippur War, the Hebrew Old Testament, & The Hobbit; and more! I frequently mix languages, politics, history, culture, original primary source documents, etc. into religion so as to give you the student a varied cultural study in order to better understand the religious documents and varied faiths of our world. Whether it's one faith or one religious document you may be seeking enlightenment for, I invite you to dig deep with me into the religions of this world!
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Sometimes vocabulary can be confusing, whether it's the prefix, verb or noun stem, or suffix. I can show you from my 15+ years of Latin how to break down a word etymologically and pull out a meaning without ever having to learn a different language. This is especially helpful for tests - like spelling tests, the PSAT, SAT, ACT, GMAT, GRE, and more - where you need a meaning immediately but lack a dictionary on hand. I can help you study for your next big exam and lay the foundation for words that will propel you forward in school, your professional career, and writing.
World History

World History

I'm a Tolkien scholar that has studied in-depth World Languages, Cultures, History, Religion, Poli-sci, Philosophy, Literature, Business, and more together to create a cohesive fabric that the student will not only find interesting but worth studying repeatedly. There is no rote memorization of passages - what you find interesting, you will learn and remember! Come learn with me!
Writing

Writing

I am big proponent of getting back to the basics of writing and knowing how to use the foundational skills of brainstorming, outlining, composing an annotated bibliography for notes, writing a first draft, practicing a reverse outline for essay clarity, and rewriting the first draft multiple times as it is edited and proofread til the finished work is complete. I am skilled in the nit-picky aspects of English grammar, punctuation, spelling, active & passive voice, logicality, essay flow, writing formats (APA, MLA, Chicago, & Turabian), and more so you can have peace of mind when working with me that the big picture as well as the tiny details are taken care of. I am no stranger to research and excel at both expository and creative writing.

Very Helpful, Patient, and Knowledgable tutor

My daughter is taking a Latin class, and we have been looking for a tutor to help her with translations and teach her Latin to help her better understand. We came across Sarah's account, and I loved all her experience. My daughter has loved working with her because she doesn't just give the translation answers away; she worked with my daughter to better understand her work's verbs, nouns, and in-depth structure. If you are looking for an affordable, experienced, and kind Latin tutor, I recommend Sarah.

Exceptional Latin Tutor: A Testimonial for Sarah

I strongly recommend Sarah for Latin tutoring and will definitely use her again. My son, currently in 6th grade Latin, missed the abative content and struggled with the material. In a last-minute emergency, Sarah, whom neither I nor my son had ever met, kindly agreed to tutor him. My initial impression of Sarah was that she exhibited exceptional politeness, kindness, and patience. Despite being a typical shy 12-year-old, my son found it easy to open up to Sarah, who demonstrated a keen sensitivity to his needs, listened attentively, and helped him feel at ease. Thank you so much, Sarah.
