I have recently reached a point in life where I am ready to work part-time. I also taught online courses and was the editor of a blog publication of the school. I wrote a number of articles for the blog.

I practiced law for a number of years in a small, private practice setting. As part of my legal practice, I wrote a number of appellate briefs. While in law school I taught a section of legal research and writing to first year students.

I completed all requirements for A PhD in political science from Vanderbilt University a number of years ago. While there I taught undergraduate courses in political science and a course in research methodology.

I spent over 20 years coaching youth sports, mostly soccer and basketball. I refereed soccer at the youth, high school, adult amateur and college level. I have a lot of experience working with young people and feel that I communicate well with them.

I feel that teaching is a gift I have been given and would greatly enjoy the opportunity to work one-on-one as a tutor. I believe that I can help students with certain subjects as well as with organizational and communications skills.

Approved Subjects

ACT English

ACT English

I have extensive experience in writing and editing. I currently teach high school social studies at a small private school near Tuscaloosa. I have worked with students on ACT preparation for a few years now. I have had good success in helping students improve their ACT scores. I work with students on test taking skills and on the subject matter tested by ACT--especially in English and Reading. At this time, I would prefer to primarily focus on helping students with the ACT, although I will consider jobs in the other subject areas highlighted on my profile.
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

I have tutoed the ACT exam for 9 years. I have worked with students individually and in groups of 2 or 3. I have provided weekend prep sessions for up to 20 students at a time. I have worked with about 80 students overall, not counting the large group sessions. I have also tutored the reading section of the GRE exam. I mostly worked in this exam with foreign students at the University of West Alabama and at the University of Alabama on English and Reading. They all had good conversational skills, but needed help with reading more efficiently and with academic/professional reading. I know that I can help your daughter. I look forward to hearing back from you.
American History

American History

I majored in Political Science and minored in history and economics at the bachelor degree level. I have a master’s degree in public administration and wrote a thesis on urban government. I finished all work on a PhD in political science. I have a J.zD. Degree. I taught undergraduate classes in government at Vanderbilt while studying there. I taught high school social studies from 2015-2022 at a small private school. I have tutored history through Wyzant. since 2013.
ASVAB

ASVAB

I have tutored the ACT, the LSAT, the GRE, the GED, and the ASVAB for over a decade. The four substantive sections of the ASVAB share a lot of similarities, although the material on the ASVAB is somewhat easier. I have helped around twenty students with the ASVB. All of them have gone on to do well on the exam.
Basketball

Basketball

I played high school basketball and intramural basketball in college. I coached youth basketball for almost 15 years. I spent time at the University of Alabama summer camps observing how the coaches worked. I have read a number of coaching books over the years. I understand the evolution of offensive basketball from the flex offense to the 1-3-1 high low post offense to the shuffle offense developed by Joel Eaves. This in turn evolved into the motion offense made popular by Bob Knight at Indiana in the 1970s. I also have followed the evolution of defense over the past half century. I can teach individual skills as well as tactics and understand how someone such as a prospective teacher would want to take a coaching theory course. I am certified to teach coaching soccer at the college level.
Bible Studies

Bible Studies

I taught adult Sunday School classes for almost 20 years. I have served as a lay speaker in the United Methodist Church. I spent nine months taking a Bible class called Disciple I, which involves a review of the entire Bible. As a teenager I participated in Bible competitions involving the memorization of Bible passages and developing the ability to quickly find passages. I have continued to study the Bible and have a personal library of over 50 books on various subjects related to Bible studies.
Criminal Justice

Criminal Justice

I passed the Alabama bar exam in 1985. I worked for several years for State Farm Ins. Cos. I then practiced law in a small, general practice setting for a dozen years. I handled hundreds of criminal cases, both at the trial and appellate levels. While in law school I had the best paper in a class on Issues in Constitutional Law and best paper in another class on Topics in Criminal Procedure. In handling these cases I obviously worked with police officers and prosecuting attorneys. This required that I become well versed in issues in criminal procedure. I have lectured in an introductory class at the University of Alabama where I discussed criminal justice issues in juvenile cases and the development of the juvenile justice system. I helped a number of clients enter into alcohol and drug rehab settings and am familiar with how the criminal justice system works with addiction-related issues.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

Tutoring elementary K-6 subjects involves tutoring reading, writing, basic math and basic English. The most important factor is whether or not the tutor has a broad background in all of the basic subject areas and whether or not the tutor has good communication skills. A review of my resume clearly leads a person to conclude that I have a solid grounding in all of the basic knowledge areas. I have two degrees in government and one in law. I have a minor in history and in economics. I have taught government and statistics at the college level. I worked for one year as a substitute teacher. I taught at every level from elementary school to high school. I have tutored math for a young woman taking the GED exam. I have worked with young people of elementary school age off and on for the past 35 years in a variety of settings. It is clear that I can work with K-6 students who need to learn how to study and how to learn. I have coached basketball, soccer and baseball working with young people in the 10-13 age group. I have been actively involved in church work with this age group. The main problem a 6th grade student will have academically usually involves the ability to read and write. It is important in working with this type of student that a tutor focus on improving reading comprehension skills. I have already qualified to teach elementary math. When I was the PTA president of my sons' elementary school I volunteered to read to different classes. In these sessions I would read something selected by the class teacher and then have a discussion with the students about what I had just read. The idea was to engage them in listening and "hearing" the stories. I also would on occasion work with groups of 2 or 3 students who were having trouble reading. My past experiences more than qualify me to tutor the subjects taught in elementary school. I know that I can help this age group.
English

English

I have a lot of experience using English. I have taught college courses, both in traditional classroom settings and online. I edited an online blog sponsored by my previous employer. I did this for over two years. During this time the blog posted almost 500 articles; I personally wrote around 150 articles. I also have experience proofreading and editing, which have allowed me to polish my English skills.
GED

GED

The GED is organized to test language, basic science, reading, and math skills. I have experience working with students. I have done this type of tutoring since 2012. I taught high school social studies from 2015 to 2022. I worked at a small private school. I tutored basic math for four years there and, in a pinch, taught algebra during my last year. Students can view my profile and gain a sense of my academic background.

Great tutor with extra information that is useful!

Mr. T helped me with macroeconomics. He helped me get a far better grade on my test than my previous test grades. He also gave me many real life examples during tutoring of the chapters we went over which proved to make me understand the material far better. I highly recommend him as a tutor for macroeconomics!

ACT tutoring

I’m very excited about the past and up coming sessions. I was surprised at how he was able to break things down that even I could understand after being out of high school for so long. I’m very positive that with more session and more ACT tricks that I can pass with my required score or maybe even higher.

Great session

Greg T. is an excellent tutor. His mannerisms and explanations are a perfect fit. He came prepared from the information that I sent him in advance, and he even had the answers to the practice test I sent him provided by the professor. If you are needing help in Economics 110, he is your guy.
