Greetings!

I'm Katherine.

I entered the field of education following my retirement from the military. I worked as a special education instructional assistant before getting licensure to teach prekindergarten - 6th grade. I taught in both general education and inclusion classrooms for 9 years, working mostly with 4th and 5th graders. I have also been tutoring small groups of students for 5 years. I was recognized by Isle of Wight County as their 2021-2022 Elementary School Teacher of the Year. Additionally, I was singled out by my school administration for my innovative lessons and contributions to students and school community.
My specialties are reading, writing, and social studies, but I am also experienced in teaching elementary school math and school science. While in the military, I volunteered teaching economics and financial literacy to kindergarten through high school students. I have experience working with students with emotional disabilities, reading and learning disabilities, mild to moderate autism, ADD/ADHD (medicated and non-medicated), hearing loss, speech concerns, diabetes, epilepsy, and gifted abilities.
One of my primary teaching strengths is building relationships with my students. This is critical because I set high standards for all of my students and push them to achieve these standards. With a strong relationship, I can often move students past even where they thought they could go. I am a strong advocate of incorporating games and technology to enhance student learning and provide a more personalized learning experience. I constantly seek out new techniques to reach my students from both my colleagues and my students themselves.
In addition to my college degrees, I have completed IMSE's Orton Gillingham Training, IMSE's Morphology+ Training, Level 1 LETRS training, and two SIM programs through the University of Kansas (Summarizing/Paraphrasing and Word-Mapping).

ADHD

ADHD

I have worked with students with ADD/ADHD in my general education and and inclusion classrooms. I have also tutored students with ADD/ADHD in small group settings. The majority of my work with these students has been in elementary level language arts (reading, writing, and vocabulary) and social studies. I have worked with both students who were medicated and those who were unmedicated.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have worked with students with mild to moderate ASD in my general education and and inclusion classrooms. I have also tutored students with ASD in small group settings. The majority of my work with these students has been in elementary level language arts (reading, writing, and vocabulary).
Common Core

Common Core

I taught in a public school classroom for 9 years preparing elementary school students for state and federal testing. My pass rates were consistently among the best in the school. More recently, I have taken to tutoring students across the country to ensure their success.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

I have worked with dyslexic students in a whole group classroom setting, in small group settings, and also in one on one tutoring settings. I completed a 30-hour course in Orton-Gillingham phonics instruction through IMSE. This has provided me with even more background to meet my students reading, spelling, and decoding needs.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I originally worked as a special education instructional assistant before getting licensure to teach in prekindergarten - 6th grade classrooms. I have been teaching in both general education and inclusion classrooms for 9 years now, working mostly with 4th and 5th graders. I have also been tutoring small groups of students for 4 years. I was recognized by Isle of Wight County as their 2021-2022 Elementary School Teacher of the Year. Additionally, I was singled out by my school administration for my innovative lessons and my contributions to students and school community.
Homeschool

Homeschool

During COVID-related school shutdowns, I delved into the world of homeschooling. I planned whole group, small group, and one on one lessons in language arts and science for my 5th grade students. This included adapting a great deal of curriculum to allow for online participation of my students. During this time, I also conducted one on one reading conferences virtually with my students to ensure they did not fall behind in their reading skills. When I was eventually able to return to the classroom, I was given the opportunity to homeschool a 5th grade student (after school hours) who was homebound for medical reasons.
Praxis

Praxis

I personally achieved high scores in various subtests of the Elementary Education Praxis, including Reading & Language Arts (196/200), Mathematics (199/200), Social Studies (197/200), and Science (200/200). These scores reflect not only my understanding of the subjects but also my ability to convey complex concepts in an accessible manner. I have had the privilege of working with students who initially struggled to pass specific subtests. Through personalized instruction and targeted practice, I helped them identify and overcome their weaknesses. As a result, students were able to successfully pass their Praxis exams, boosting their confidence and paving the way for their future teaching careers.

SOL

SOL

I have been working to prepare 4th and 5th grades for Virginia SOLs for 9 years now. I specialized in reading and Virginia Studies, but I also have experience helping students prepare for their math and science SOLs. My SOL pass rates have consistently been among the highest at my school.
Special Needs

Additionally, I have worked with many students with these disabilities in one on one reading conferences.
