I have 33 years of experience as a biology teacher and conservationist. My life's work is to communicate my love of nature and the life sciences to newcomers to the biological sciences. I've taught a wide range of courses across the biology curriculum to students ranging in age from 13 to adult and have mentored numerous students in independent research. I'm considered by many to be a humorous, engaging, inspiring, and compassionate teacher.

I've taught a wide range of biology electives for 25 years. In addition, I have a good general science education, an undergraduate minor in chemistry, and 36 semester hours of mathematics and statistics. I recently took the Praxis I (reading, writing, mathematics) with high scores in all areas. My own ACT scores were in the high percentiles.

I have completed several dozen hours in botany from both my graduate and undergraduate schools and taught botany for twenty years to advanced high school students. I have undertaken consulting contracts that entailed detailed surveys of the plants of such areas as Gulf Islands National Seashore, Camp Stewart, GA, and the DeSoto National Forest.

I hold a masters in natural science. I taught AP Environmental Science and/or Ecology for 23 years on the secondary level. My curriculum for field research-centered ecology/environmental science for secondary students is nationally published: 'Adapting a field research course to high school biology: twenty years of leading teenagers to do science in the woods.' The Science Teacher 91(6): 20-31.

I have taught a year-long genetics elective to advanced high school students for 20 years. The course focused on problem solving and laboratories and was divided into Mendelian Genetics and Biotechnology. The course text was Griffiths, A.J.F., S. R. Wessler, R.C. Lewontin, W.M. Gelbart, D. T. Suzuki, and J.H. Miller. 2005. "Introduction to Genetic Analysis"

My Praxis I Scores were Reading 200, Writing 184, Math 192. My Praxis II Score for Biology was 196. These are based on a lifetime of reading and writing and two college degrees, plus 24+ hours of college math through multivariable calculus, and two degrees in biology, plus 26 years teaching biology.

Boosted grades and boosted knowledge

I have now been tutored by Barry in two different Biology classes (genetics and evolutionary biology). In both cases, my tutoring sessions with him have bumped me up a whole letter grade. Barry is a fantastic tutor in that he is very flexible, knowledgeable, and passionate about teaching. My only regret is that I did sessions with Barry at the end of each semester only. I feel like I could have gone up more than one letter grade or held a high grade from the beginning if I did sessions with him consistently throughout the semester. I would recommend Barry as a tutor to anyone.
