My name is John, and I enjoy helping students understand mathematics, especially algebra. After nearly twenty-six years on active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard, I returned to the University of South Alabama to pursue my long-time goal of teaching mathematics. I earned an undergraduate degree in mathematics and statistics and a master’s degree in secondary mathematics education.
My experience includes student teaching at a local middle school and tutoring middle school, high school, and college students one-on-one in subjects including algebra, geometry, and calculus.
My approach is to break challenging ideas into manageable steps and build from the fundamentals. I focus on helping students understand why the math works rather than simply memorizing formulas or procedures. By connecting new concepts to things students already understand, I try to make mathematics less intimidating and more meaningful.
I also believe that every student learns differently. If one explanation does not make sense, I am willing to approach the problem from another direction until we find a method that works for that student. I encourage students to ask questions, work through problems with me, and gradually become more confident solving problems independently.
