My name is Makeda M. I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from Stanford University. I hold an Associate of Arts in Early Childhood Education, and I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering with a Minor in Mathematical Sciences. I have completed coursework in calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra. My education has given me the knowledge to obtain the Alabama Early Childhood Education and Secondary Mathematics (Grades 6-12) Certificates. It has also given me the skills to be an effective teacher. As a part of my professional development, I have obtained the ACT Instructional Mastery (AIM) Math certification.

I taught in elementary schools in grades pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and second as a teacher and certified substitute for 3 years. I have also taught grades 9-12 in high schools for 2 years. The high school math courses I have taught include: Financial Algebra, Precalculus, Geometry, Algebra I, and Algebra II. My approach to teaching high school students mathematics is to build their skills by utilizing their background knowledge and drawing connections to real world applications. I analyze student work by assigning them digital and paper based practice problems that require them to show their steps. I also take time to work with them 1-to-1 to determine if they are applying concepts correctly. This allows me to then prepare next steps for instruction. In addition, I assign review problem sets to help students retain knowledge.

Whether your goal is to work on specific concepts in Algebra or Precalculus, or to prepare to take the ACT or SAT, I will develop an individualized student portfolio with next steps and retention strategies.

Approved Subjects

ACT Math

ACT Math

As an Alabama DoE certified teacher, I spent 2 years teaching various high school math subjects, including Geometry, Algebra 1, standard/Honors Algebra 2, Precalculus, and Mathematics with Finance. During the scheduled block for Enrichment (similar to homeroom), I reviewed ACT concepts, worked with students on practice questions, encouraged strong study habits, and administered practice exams. In addition, within my Algebra 2 classes, I incorporated preparation for core topics covered on the ACT Math exam. I reinforced key concepts through structured note-taking, revisited foundational content from Geometry and Algebra I, and trained students to use Desmos, since it is built directly into the ACT's online testing format.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

As an Alabama DoE certified teacher, I spent 2 years teaching various high school math subjects, including Geometry, Algebra 1, standard/Honors Algebra 2, Precalculus, and Mathematics with Finance. I understand where students typically struggle in Algebra 1—such as solving multi-step equations, factoring, systems of equations, and linear vs. exponential functions—and how to make these concepts real-world applicable. Algebra 1 lays the foundation for advanced math subjects including Algebra 2 and Precalculus, as well as college entry exams; therefore, my goal is to ensure students build not only the foundational terminology learned in Algebra 1, but also the problem-solving skills to carry it forward.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

As an Alabama DoE certified teacher, I spent 2 years teaching various high school math subjects, including Geometry, Algebra 1, standard/Honors Algebra 2, Precalculus, and Mathematics with Finance. I understand where students typically struggle—such as quadratics, logarithms, complex numbers, and applied trigonometry—and how to make these concepts real-world applicable. Because Algebra 2 prepares students for the core topics covered on the ACT Math exam, my targeted approach helps students excel in their current class while simultaneously building test taking confidence and skills.
Precalculus

Precalculus

As an Alabama DoE certified teacher, I understand where students typically struggle in Precalculus—such as polynomial arithmetic (especially division), logarithms, complex numbers, applied trigonometry, and function transformations—and how to make these concepts real-world applicable. Precalculus builds the bridge between Algebra 2 and Calculus, preparing students for college-level mathematics; therefore, my goal is to ensure students have not only the foundational terminology, but also the problem-solving skills needed to move confidently into higher-level math.
SAT Math

SAT Math

As an Alabama DoE certified teacher, I spent 2 years teaching various high school math subjects, including Precalculus, Mathematics with Finance, Algebra 1, Geometry, and standard/Honors Algebra 2. My goal for each student is to help them develop a portfolio of their work. To help students prepare for the SAT, I will use practice tests to identify their areas needing improvement as well as their strengths. I will do my best to build their confidence across the four tested domains—Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry. I will reinforce key concepts through structured note-taking, revisit foundational content from Geometry and Algebra I, and train students to use Desmos, since it's built directly into the SAT's online testing format.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is often incorporated into Geometry and Algebra 2 within high school core math classes. I have taught both, as well as Algebra 1, Precalculus, and Mathematics with Finance. My goal is to work with students to understand how trigonometry applies in the real world, which is something many of my students have wanted to see. I will also incorporate practice geared toward college entry examinations, as well as preparation for advanced courses such as Precalculus and Calculus.
