I am a retired professional who has over 23 years direct experience in government and commercial fields. I have been a President of a company for over 14 years and have held many technical positions serving both industry and federal government customers. I have been an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at a University and taught freshman through graduate students in chemistry and biochemistry.
I encourage students to determine what is their goal for their study. After that we develop a plan on how to achieve that goal. Some students do not like the courses they are taking and that is OK. Not all courses will be favorites and a student's individual goal may only need for that course to be understood and lead to accomplishing other goals.
Many students need instructions on how to study not just how to solve the current homework or problem. If you teach a student how to find the information this helps them solve future problems because not all information can be memorized. Important to know how to attack a problem and solve it more than just knowing facts.
