Hello everyone! I love to see the moment when "the light turns on" & students totally understand what I just taught. I am constantly learning to keep my knowledge fresh -- for instance, right now, I am working on my TEFL 160 Certification to improve my ability to Teach English as a Foreign Language.

My rates vary based on the complexity of the subject & the time I need to customize each lesson to meet an individual student's needs. Please see the Rates & Policies page for details. For example, I charge a higher rate for students in college-level courses than I do for K-6 students.

In March 2020, I received my TEFL 40 (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Certificate, I have an MBA, a Master's in Finance, and a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice. I graduated with honors in both of my master's degrees and my bachelor's degree. Over the years, I developed certain study skills that helped me succeed, and help my students succeed, too!

I have excellent skills in English, Grammar, and Literature. In addition to my English and Grammar skills, I am also proficient in APA citations, references, and formatting.

I am a mentor with iCouldbe--a program for at-risk high school students. I encourage high school students to stay in school, do their best, & go to college. During the school year, I mentor up to five high school students online, helping them choose a career path, or a college path. I work with each of my assigned students all school year, answer questions about my profession, or my degrees, & help them progress through the program.

I taught with Boise Community Education for seven years and I am currently in my 12th year of tutoring with Wyzant.

If you want someone to do your student's work for them, then I am not for you. If you believe in empowering students with the skills they need to achieve success, then contact me. I have daytime, evening, & weekend appointments available. I look forward to working with you, or your student -- providing the skills needed for success.

Approved Subjects

ACT English

ACT English

I have successfully tutored several students who were preparing for the ACT English Exam. To start, I give each student a free diagnostic test to see where the "holes" are in their learning. Then, we focus on each of those holes (weak areas), so that when the student takes the actual ACT English Exam, they have a much better chance for success.
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

I have tutored many students in ACT Reading, ACT English, and SAT Reading. I like to use various worksheets and activities, in addition to weekly homework (typically the homework takes no more than 30 minutes to an hour per week) to help students absorb the concepts, rather than learn them and forget them.
Business

Business

In July 2012, I graduated Cum Laude with my Master's in Business (MBA) with a Finance Specialization. I am a member of both Sigma Beta Delta Honor Society and Golden Key International Honor Society.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

Learning styles differ among people. Teachers rarely have time to adapt their learning styles to meet the needs of each student. As a tutor, it is my job to find the methods of learning that work best for the student, tailoring the lesson to meet each individual student's needs. My 7+ years of experience teaching and tutoring has shown that, for many students with Dyslexia and other reading issues, a multi-sensory approach to teaching often works best. Using color, touch, sound and other senses engages the student. Tools such as: the iPad, tangible objects, songs, and age-appropriate learning activities structured around the content of the lesson, help the student stay focused, increasing their desire to learn. Through repetition, time, and patience, the student is able to improve memory retention and comprehension over time.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have 11 years of experience helping students from Kindergarten through 8th grade in Math, Reading, English, Grammar and the Microsoft Office Suite. In addition, I have 7 years of experience teaching sign language to Kindergartners - 2nd grade, and 3rd - 6th grade. This experience provided me with various methods of teaching that has enabled me to keep the attention of children from all ages. I believe that when a person struggles with a subject, it is a direct result of a "hole" in their learning. Holes can be developed from missing school days or from a teacher who doesn't explain a concept in a way that reaches the student. My job, as their tutor, is to find whatever "holes" exist in the student's learning and "fill" them with knowledge.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have tutored K-6 Students in English, Math, Reading, and Grammar for 11 years. I start with a free diagnostic test to find the "holes" in your student's learning and then find or create curriculum to fill those "holes".
English

English

I have very strong English and grammar skills. I am a patient person, and I love working with students -- both online and in person. I work well with students of all ages, and am able to create a custom lesson plan to meet each student's individual needs.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

March 13, 2020 Received Advanced Certificate in Teaching English Online, Accreditation of TEFL/TESOL and Training. In addition to my certification, I have tutored many ESL students online, and in person. I believe strongly that all students should be taught using the language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. I believe this method helps to improve retention. To aid in learning and to make learning more fun, I like having students play grammar games in addition to learning via the whiteboard and worksheets. I have seen tremendous progress in ESL students' understanding and learning of grammar and punctuation using these methods.
General Computer

General Computer

I have intermediate to advanced skills in each of the Microsoft Office Suite products (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc).
Grammar

Grammar

I have been tutoring Grammar for many years. When I entered college, my English and Grammar skills were so high, I was able to skip the two required English classes and still obtain the 6 credits for them. I believe most Grammar problems stem from a "hole" in a student's education. Therefore, I use a variety of methods to find and fill those "holes".
Law

Law

As a teenager, I worked for a law firm. My love of law developed from there and I defended myself when I drove across a "farmers lane" to get home from school faster, objecting when the officer provided evidence that was not present the night I was stopped and impressing the judge enough to ask me how I had gained my experience in law. I graduated Summa Cum Laude with my Bachelors in Criminal Justice Administration in 2008. In addition, I have helped attorneys and private investigators, from time-to-time, when they needed research for a case.
Literature

Literature

I have tutored many Literature students, helping them to dig deeper, analyze material and use critical thinking skills. Some of the books I have read with my students are: Wuthering Heights, The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Handmaid's Tale. I graduated with honors in all of my graduate classes. When I tutor literature, I read whatever my student is reading, keeping up with him, or her, to allow us to discuss the item with a more critical eye.
Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel

I have used Excel daily in my full-time job for the past 24 years. In addition, Excel was required for each of my three college degrees -- Bachelors of Criminal Justice Administration, Masters in Finance and my MBA.
Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint

I am proficient in the entire Microsoft Office Suite. I use PowerPoint now for all of my work presentations, and for tutoring. I have used PowerPoint for over 10 years, as it was used during my college years, as well.
Microsoft Publisher

Microsoft Publisher

In my present job, where I have been employed for 18 years, I have created several brochures using Microsoft Publisher. In addition, I have designed advertisements, newsletters and stationary using Publisher's WYSIWIG (What You See Is What You Get) interface. When a few basic functions are understood, Microsoft Publisher becomes an easy-to-use; easy-to-train program.
Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word

I have Intermediate to Advanced Skills in the Microsoft Office Suite.
Proofreading

Proofreading

Having studied and taught English and English as a Second Language (ESL( for over 8 years, I have a lot of proofreading and editing papers. I also proofread my own papers when I was in college obtaining my Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice, my Masters in Business and my Masters in Finance. I graduated with honors with all three degrees.
Reading

Reading

I have been tutoring kindergartners through adults for many years. I use a variety of games and activities to make reading both interactive and fun. If a student enjoys learning, they will look forward to their lessons. If a student enjoys reading, they'll have a lifetime of adventures waiting for them.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

If you select me, I will have you take a free diagnostic exam to find the "holes" in your learning. Then, I will customize curriculum to meet your needs to fill the "holes" in your bucket of knowledge. Reading is a foundational subject that you build on over time. If you miss a concept, or don't understand what your teacher is saying, then you develop a "hole" in your learning. Knowledge is just like a bucket with holes in it -- when you add more to it, it leaks out. As we fill the "holes" knowledge is retained and scores improve.
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

I have tutored SAT Reading and Writing for 15 years. I start out giving a practice test (before we meet), so I can see and pinpoint the areas of weakness prior to meeting. The practice test is at no expense to the student.
Series 6

Series 6

I earned FINRA Series 6 and 63 in 2008, and I have 15+ years experience working in a financial planning company.
Spelling

Spelling

Spelling was my favorite subject in elementary school. During my elementary school years, I entered many Spelling Bees, and eventually won my District Spelling Bee! I still love Spelling! I'd love to help you, or your child, learn to love Spelling as much as I do!
Writing

Writing

I have been tutoring writing ever since college. I have excellent grammar and punctuation skills. In fact, when I went to college many years ago, I did so well on my English entrance that I was given my English credits without having to take any English classes.

Couldn't have done it without her

Advanced finance was probably the hardest course I have ever taken. It was hard enough where others literally dropped the class. As intimidating as this course was, I could not have completed it without Shannon. She really knows her stuff and knows finance so well she can explain concepts in several different ways to help you understand. She was always there for me whether it was online or meeting in person. She was understanding when to I had to change or reschedule sessions. If you want to learn and understand finance from someone who can teach very well, you should consider Shannon.
