I am a PhD graduate of the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB). I've been teaching and tutoring mathematics for over 10 years. My strongest personal characteristics in tutoring are that I'm good with children and adults with anxiety or attention deficit disorder, patient with the student, and encouraging. There are objectives that I have when tutoring the student: explaining the material so that the student understands it, building self-confidence in the student's ability to solve problems, and helping the student enjoy the learning process.
I often incorporate relevant history of the topic in order to grab the student's interest. For example, René Descartes introduced the cartesian plane. Legend has it that Descartes discovered this coordinate system when lying in his bed and watching a bug move across the ceiling. He became motivated to describe the movement of that bug -- hence the cartesian plane. I use a hands-on approach to guide the student in his/her discovery of Descartes revelation. I've enjoyed having Douglas over a span of 6 months with Calculus 1 and 2 help. He is a great tutor and very helpful and accommodating! I would recommend him to everyone and anyone who needs help in Calculus! Thanks again Douglas!
Needed a math expert quickly and Douglas C responded and we had a review the next day! Very pleased with his expertise and willingness to accommodate our short notice.
Douglas definitely made a difference in my son's ability to pass a Calculus III class AFTER it was halfway over. Thank you!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been diagnosed with ADD twice, once as a child, and again as an adult. I believe having the disorder helps me understand the struggles of an ADD student. I have also tutored a child in 5th grade with ADHD. My effort was well received, I found that my experiences helped me approach the solution in a manner that kept his attention. I've also taught several courses at the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB). The classes almost always included at least two students with the disorder who required special attention. Finally, I'm patient -- patience will always be needed when tutoring a student with ADD/ADHD.
While tutoring in the math lab at the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB), I tutored at least one student (taking the course) every week. I've worked in the math lab for several years.
I got my PhD in math at the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB). Several of the required courses for my degree included a solid understanding of Linear Algebra. In addition, I have several years of experience tutoring students taking the course. In particular, I worked in the math learning lab at UAB for the past year -- during this time, I tutored several students taking Linear Algebra once a week.
