Hi! Bonjour, marhaba, as-salamu-alaikum, ni hao! My name is Aaya (said like “Ah, yeah”). I’ve tutored professionally since December 2024 and informally for years before that. I teach a wide variety of subjects: math, science, reading, writing, French, and Arabic, as well as standardized test prep (SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, AP, IB, CLEP), and my students have ranged from age 4 (twins learning Arabic) to 65 (a returning student completing math requirements for a ministry degree).
In high school, I was in the IB program, taking IB French, IB Chemistry, and IB Psychology, plus AP Statistics just because, and took an extra year of French independent study. I earned my bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering with honors from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, additionally completing an undergraduate research thesis through the Science and Technology Honors program. After graduating in December 2015, my grandmother’s stroke and need for more involved care led me to rethink a research career, and I pivoted to information systems and data analytics, earning a master of science in management information systems in August 2017. I’m now focusing my skills with a master of engineering in machine learning and artificial intelligence and have four classes left.
I like my sessions to be student-led rather than lecture-based. Students bring their questions and often their own materials, and we explore them together. Depending on the student and subject, I may demonstrate several examples step by step, then give a practice problem for them to solve independently. I ask guiding questions to help students think more deeply and often share tips I learned the hard way, having myself struggled with math in elementary and middle school before everything finally clicked (calculus was surprisingly easy after being driven to tears by algebra).
