I have been tutoring Elementary and Middle School Math and English Language Arts for 2-3 years. I started tutoring in-person with students and have recently moved to virtual tutoring. I find that tutoring students 1-on-1 is such a valuable concept because I can attend to their individual needs a lot easier than I could when I had nearly 40 students in the classroom.
I like to present the foundational skills for the specific grade level and content area to help the students obtain a firm grasp on the material. I ask a lot of questions to confirm understanding and comprehension. I find that this can also increase the retention of the material. Additionally, I also weave in fun review games such as Kahoot so that they can also have fun while learning. This encourages the students to remain attentive and engaged and increases their self-confidence and positive outlook on the content area, themselves, and school in general.
