Welcome. I look forward to working with you! I served over 30 years in the classroom teaching students from sixth grade to adults. In my tenure as an educator, I was recognized locally and nationally for my devotion and ability to guide students to success. As a National Board Certified Teacher, I maintain best practices for students both inside and outside the classroom. My experience enables me to meet students where they are and guide them to where they want or need to be. I use positive reinforcement for motivation, but I am clear on areas the student needs to work on. My professionalism is imperative to me.

As a first-generation college graduate from a working-class family, I understand the importance of organization skills, taking responsibility for one's own education, and developing a work ethic that, when instilled, benefits that person in all aspects of their life. I am friendly, approachable, and offer praise whenever I can, but I do not believe in wasting anyone's time and hard-earned money.

I have successfully taught Advanced Placement (AP) level classes as well as those below grade level. With a Master's degree in creative writing, I am passionate about teaching students how to become better writers and thus communicators. I am experienced in teaching students how to prepare for college or career readiness. Students who elicit my help in writing college essays frequently have great success for college entrance and scholarships.

Approved Subjects

English

English

I am National Board (NBCT) certified in English Language Arts. I also have a Bachelor of Secondary Education in English Language Arts with a focus on English and journalism.
Literature

Literature

My main focus in undergraduate school was British literature. However, in graduate school, I completed many of my courses in world and American literature. I am an avid reader, and I like to expand my students' world by reading from many diverse cultures and backgrounds and always while considering historical context.
Reading

Reading

Active reading is the only reading that a student retains. Therefore, students much learn to notice and note what they are reading. I have helped hundreds of students over the years to look for information that will help them understand and retain what they are reading.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is taught early on, and once a child gets behind, it is difficult to learn and retain new vocabulary. Therefore, vocabulary must be learned through reading and using newly retained words in the student's lexicon. Reading is essential to learning vocabulary.
Writing

Writing

As an AP Language and Composition teacher, one learns a great deal about how to teach writing and how to appreciate the choices a writer makes to appeal to his or her audience to convey a specific message. As a writer, myself, I bring experience on how to use skills and techniques that make that message relevant, clear, and effective. I am best at helping students to not only communicate clearly but to find the best possible way to gain a reader's attention and keep it. Writing is the final product of all skills learned in English language arts. It is also the most important for college and career readiness.
