Tutoring reading and writing to middle- and high-schoolers over the last six years has given me excellent knowledge of ACT English and Reading requirements as well as those for SAT Reading and Writing. (It's also given me useful insights into how young people think.... and how they don't think!) Students do well on those exams when they know what to look for as they read and how to organize their thoughts when they write. I teach that basic information.

English is my mother tongue, and I have spent years speaking, studying, writing, and teaching the language. I teach non-English speakers to improve their skills as well as students struggling with written English, both reading and writing. My familiarity with English gives me great resources to share the beauty, usefulness, and efficiency of one of the world's most popular means of communication.
Literature

Literature

Appreciating the beauty, implication, and purpose of literary work takes time and thought, but is highly rewarding and worth the effort. I have read much and thought much about the mysteries hidden in literature, and can share with my students both young and old.
Reading

Reading

When young readers understand what they are reading, the effort to read is no longer an effort. I can choose books that kids love, help bring their vocabulary up to the reading level, and explain the nuances, actions, plots, and purposes of story. There is so much more to read besides Harry Potter, and boys and girls are delighted when they find stories they can relate to.

English is famous for its irregular spelling--syllables often don't sound like they are spelled--but there are lots of simple rules that, once learned, make spelling more predictable and more accurate. I teach those rules along with root words, and see vast improvements in young writers' spelling.

The English language is both difficult and challenging. But with an 850-word vocabulary and a knowledge of basic grammar, English can easy as well as fun. I make learning English as simple and enjoyable as possible.

Vocabulary

I teach vocabulary that kids can relate to by teaching root words, descriptive words, action words, and word origins. That's a kid's best way to build a vocabulary that is not only useful but fun to use. The practice greatly enhances reading enjoyment as well as articulation when either speaking or writing.

Louis helped my son's English with an emphasis of writing. It is the first time for my son to take tutoring classes so he was little bit nervous. Teaching in a way we can't

Mr. C. has been such a great help in tutoring my 12-year-old son in writing. He takes the time to identify where my son is having problems and is able to direct the lessons to deal with those issues directly.
