Experienced Math and English Tutor with a Master of Arts in Teaching

Hi, I'm Ivy! I am a teacher and tutor with 13+ years of experience working primarily with 6th through 8th grade students. I graduated in 2009 cum laude with an English degree and art minor from the University of Alaska Anchorage, then went on to receive a Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Alaska Southeast. I hold a teaching certification from the state of Alaska in grades K-8 and am highly qualified in math, science, and language arts for the middle grades (6-8).

While working through my master's degree, I spent three years as a tutor and substitute teacher working for the Anchorage School District and privately. I worked with every grade and every subject area during that time period. During my internship, I taught 7th grade language arts, and once I earned my teaching certificate, I spent ten years teaching Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, and Math Art to 6th-8th graders. I have tutored all of those subjects and tutored geometry as well. At my previous school I also served for seven years as math department chair.

My approach to tutoring is to tailor my lessons to each student's needs, both their learning style and the content they would like help with. I like to structure a brief lesson that involves the student in an engaging way with the subject matter and then directly teach the content before allowing time in the session for them to practice and ask questions.
