Bio

I love teaching, learning, and exchanging ideas with students, and I am here to help you. I have a 150 hour TESOL Certificate and taught English, Intercultural Communication and English Literature last year at Zhangjiajie College in China. I love teaching, learning, and exchanging ideas with students, and I am here to help you. I have a 150 hour TESOL Certificate and taught English, Intercultural Communication and English Literature last year at Zhangjiajie College in China. I recently retired from full-time teaching at Kenai Peninsula College and University of Alaska Anchorage, where I taught anthropology courses for more than ten years, regularly teaching over twelve different courses at all undergraduate levels. I also taught anthropology as an adjunct professor at Oregon State University for ten years, combining teaching with a career in international work with nonprofit organizations. I graduated magna cum laude with a Ph.D. in Anthropology and Natural Resources from Cornell University, and I have a B.A. in English Literature from Yale University. My students consistently give me high ratings for my courses, notably for challenging students academically while providing a high level of knowledge and enthusiasm for the subjects, and accessibility and support for my students. Often students enjoyed my anthropology courses enough to take three or more courses with me, including some students who went on to major in anthropology or related degrees. A large number of students I have coached in writing skills have advanced their writing abilities by one full grade in one semester. As an adviser I have supported many students who have gone on to graduate schools and professional careers. I am also a writer, and retired a few years early to expand my writing career. I have published academic works, nonfiction, fiction, and poetry in a wide range of publishing outlets, including Cornell University Press.

I have taught anthropology in all four sub-fields, biological, archaeological, linguistic, and cultural, at undergraduate and graduate levels for over twenty years. I have participated in multiple research projects in environmental and ecological anthropology, and have written and published an academic book, which received excellent reviews in academic journals, and have contributed chapters to other books. I have written and published academic and popular articles covering many topics in anthropology. I received excellent teaching, research, and service reviews in my last multi-year review at the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2015.

I have taught English to speakers of other languages overseas in China and West Africa and in the United States, with documented success, including high test scores for students in both oral and written tests. I use a variety of methods tailored to each student or group of students, focusing on what works best for them, with free optional homework assignments to enhance learning between our sessions. Conversations and corrections are an important part of lessons. At the same time, my teaching approach puts students first, by working on their individual problem areas and supporting their strengths. I have taught for over twenty years; my students describe me as patient, friendly, and encouraging, with ambitious standards for their achievement.

I have taught writing intensive social science courses at college and graduate school levels for over twenty years and supervised more than 10 dissertations and master's theses. I have also taught English literature and American literature including essay-writing to upper division college students. I am a published author with academic works (Cornell University Press, the Environmental Protection Agency, the US Forest Service, and others) as well as published fiction, nonfiction and award-winning poetry.

Wonderful, Skilled Tutor!

Catherine was a wonderful tutor. I needed help editing a non-fiction book. Her academic knowledge and writing skills improved my work fivefold. In the process my own writing skills sharpened. Catherine is an amazing tutor! As a college student, I was struggling in my writing class. Though I had good ideas, the way I presented them was very unclear. Catherine helped me clarify the flow of the essay as well as pointing out the literary techniques I unknowingly applied and that which I could apply to make the essay stronger. She also spent outside time on her own to go over the essay before the lesson and further improve the essay after the lesson. Under her guidance and peer editing, my essay grade jumped significantly throughout the journey. I was able to become a better writer and a better editor of my own.
