I am looking for a reading tutor for my daughter, who is in 2nd grade.
While she is a bright student, she is currently struggling to bridge the gap between basic decoding and reading-to-learn. I am looking for a tutor who can take a holistic approach to help her in the following areas:
Foundational Phonics: Strengthening her ability to decode more complex words and multi-syllable patterns.
Reading Fluency: Moving beyond word-by-word reading to improve pacing, accuracy, and expression.
Reading Comprehension: Helping her move from just "reading the words" to understanding main ideas, making inferences, and summarizing themes.
Building Confidence: Most importantly, she needs an encouraging environment where she feels safe to make mistakes as she tackles these new challenges.
A few questions:
Do any tutors have experience utilizing Science of Reading-based interventions (like Orton-Gillingham or similar structured literacy approaches)?
Do any tutors offer an initial assessment to identify specific gaps in her phonics knowledge?
How would a tutor incorporate activities that keep 3rd graders engaged and motivated, especially when they feel frustrated by difficult texts?
We are hoping to schedule 1- 2 sessions a week. Are any tutors currently accepting new students who fit these needs?
