Our daughter is in 10th grade. She is taking the AP Chemistry course and will be taking the AP Exam, as well as subject SAT for Chemistry.
She is a very good student and is currently at an A- grade (90%). Her goal is to continue this grade and maybe make it better, but also to ace the AP Exam and Subject SATs.
Occasionally she has not done very well in class exams and in talking to her she could use a little help in analytical problem solving in Chemistry. She has struggled a bit when you have to connect the dots across various concepts and use them to solve a problem.
In her words
We use the Zumdahl Chemistry AP Edition Textbook. We do not read the chapters, instead, our teacher teaches us the material. The textbook is only used for practice/homework problems.
The past quiz that I didn't do well on:
This was a quiz on thermodynamics. The written portion gave word problems in which we had to solve for some kind of variable using heat equations, and eventually, these problems moved to the analysis of such math equations. The multiple choice dealt with a few math problems but mostly dealt with the ideologies and concepts behind thermodynamics - which is what I struggle with the most.
What I struggle with:
In terms of written questions, I struggle with how to attack a problem. I will often be confused by what the problem is asking for and will try to solve the problem through some complicated, obscure way. In essence, I need to work on identifying the type of problem and knowing exactly how to attack it.
In terms of multiple choice, I struggle with understanding why things work the way they do. I know the basic material covered in the chapter/unit, but I struggle with relating the concept back to the larger factors involved in the concept, hence not understanding the full processes. Also, I struggle with contextualizing. Fo

I have two children that I need to have tutored. I have a 9 year old daughter in 4th grade and I have a 15 year old son that is a sophomore. My daughter has always struggled with math and she is also currently struggling with her current school work. My son has ADHD and he is currently taking geometry. His issue is being able to learn new math skills, he is very bright but he does need a additional assistance and understanding new math concepts.
