About
Kathryn: |
|
I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Illinois Wesleyan University in 2005 with a 3.95 GPA and Honors Research recognition. The bulk of my courses were in French, History, Psychology, and Classical Studies. I have been tutoring for 10 years and have seen dozens of students respond to individualized explanation. I have tutored from the kindergarten through college level in subjects ranging from Elementary Math and Reading to Algebra to French. I have taken my old struggles in a variety of subjects and used them to not only figure out how a student is thinking about a particular concept, but to explain the correct thinking process effectively. Time and again, I have seen students falter under the guidance of a "fluent French" professor because helping a student "get it" MUST involve understanding "not getting it." When it comes to a skill, I like to start as basic as possible, then move on to more complex examples, and finally teach how to recognize and apply the skill in context. I belief this last step is important and often hurried/glossed-over in textbooks and courses, yet stressed in tests. It needs to be broken down as much as possible. I am dedicated to being individualized and believe that my greatest asset as a tutor is an ability to adapt to different thinking styles and situations, often on the spur of the moment. All of my tutorees have learned to trust that I WILL come up with a way that he/she can understand the subject material. |

I have worked tutoring students in both math and reading under the No Child Left Behind act. This involved working with curricula from Kindergarden through Sixth grade in both individual and group environments. I have also created and implemented a year long extracurricular reading plan for a seven year old boy and created a French curriculum for a K-2 after-school French class for about 15 students. In addition, I have privately tutored elementary students in a range of subjects including reading, math, science, and social studies.

study skills
|
I have successfully worked with several students at the elementary and junior high level to improve their study skills and organization for all subjects. I have years of experience identifying learning styles and creating adaptive techniques that demonstrate how to make studying more efficient and fun. For this to be successful, I develop a sense of trust with the student and help him or her see that better studying leads to more time enjoying the things that he or she likes to do. I also make sure that I provide them with a range of options for studying so they have a "tool box" they can pick from. Having these choices lets them become less reliant and more independent learners. It also relieves frustration because the student has a back up when the proscribed method isn't working. In addition, I include the parents because it is important for parents to be aware of these methods and styles and the ways in which their kids learn.

Student Reviews:
Amazing!
Kathryn has been so dedicated to helping Tori with Pre Algebra. She works very hard and stays on task until Tori grasps the concepts. She has been a motivator, encourager and cheerleader for Tori. As Tori has said, she really cares. She has also helped Tori with some study habits in other subjects.
