About Barbara

I am a NYS and NYC certified ESL teacher with 15 years of experience. I have taught English as a Second Language and ESOL in New York, Japan, and China to students from kindergarten through college and to working adults. Before I became a teacher I was communications liaison for a senior vice president of a major NYC corporation. I received my BA from Penn State University and my MA from Adelphi University.

I would prefer to teach English to adults.

More On Barbara's Subjects

ESL/ESOL

With over 15 years of teaching English as a Second Language in America and overseas, I have learned that ESL students need more than the basics of English. Those basics include: vocabulary, sentence construction, grammar, phonics, reading, and writing. Students also need an understanding of the more difficult area of English -- and that is -- idioms. Americans infuse more than 50% their daily language with idioms. In addition to understanding idioms, students need to learn how to incorporate appropriate body language. Body language conveys at least 70% of the message. As you can see, ESL is more than teaching basic English. It is a comprehensive multifaceted study that can help put you on a more equal footing with native born Americans -- in school or on the job..
