My name is Mary. I graduated from Appalachian State University in December 2008 with a degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Visual Arts. I love school! I have high hopes to become an elementary teacher, however for now I am substitute teaching in the Auburn City Schools. In high school I took a lot of AP courses and did very well and primarily focused on art which still remains to be a passion of mine. My teaching style one on one is focused yet fun. I want to make sure that the learner is engaged in what I am teaching and more importantly that they are learning the material. I feel that the key to teaching any subject at any grade level is scaffolding, an ability to break down information so that it can be more effectively understood. Sometimes in the large classroom setting when a teacher is just trying to teach the material it is difficult to make sure that everyone is effectively retaining the material. The individual needs of a particular student are not always met. I feel confident in my ability to teach with patience and kindness so that a student can feel successful at whatever they are trying to achieve.

I have always been very artistic and love to draw it is still a passion of mine. I started drawing at a young age but got more serious and realized it was something I had a talent for my sophomore year in high school. That year I won most artistic girl. My junior and senior year I was involved in National Art Honor Society and curated a number of art shows for my school. I completed at AP Drawing Portfolio and graduated with honors in Fine Arts from my high school. I also received a medal during graduation for Mastery in Traditional Media. In college I minored in Visual Arts.
