About Charles

I graduated from Princeton University with a BSE in Mechanical Engineering. My area of expertise includes Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, and Statistics. However, I most enjoy teaching Regents Physics, Physics 1 & 2, General Chemistry 1 & 2, and Organic Chemistry 1 & 2. I also have experience tutoring SAT Math, SAT Physics, GRE, MCAT, and the RN Nursing Exam.

My approach is hands-on as well as holistic. My sessions are run much like a workshop where I walk the student through the step-by-step processes needed to solve even the most complex problems. Beyond this, I also cater to the student's personality. I give them the help that most teachers or professors are not able to provide. Student who are anxious, disorganized, or gifted can perform better if they're taught the proper patience, organizational skills, and planning skills. This is why most of my students show an immediate improvement after just a few sessions with me.

Over the years, I've taught scores of adult and high school students, volunteered as a tutor for the IRC, worked as an after-school instructor for Mad Science, and taught ESL in Tokyo. From these varied experiences, I've learned the winning formula for great tutoring: patience, understanding, creativity, organization, and a strong knowledge of the subject matter.

Best wishes! I hope to see you soon!

Last year, I had the chance to teach primary school students the game of chess through Mad Science (Schoolhouse Chess). I taught a dozen after-school classes and 3 summer camps. The classes consisted of learning the basics (the moves, how to capture, promotions, castling, chess money), the endgame (draw, stalemate, checkmate), and more advanced topics (pinning, forking, skewering, chess notation). I play online just about every day. I practice the various opening defenses (e.g. Queen's gambit) and other concepts taught within the Schoolhouse Chess curriculum: controlling the center, attacking up the middle, leaving no hanging pieces, etc...
