How does a verbal expression express an equation?

I am working on a sheet, and I do not understand how to use a verbal expression to express an equation. I have never heard of it before, and I am expected to solve problems using this.

I think the directions are just asking for a "story" to use as an example of an equation.

 

So, if they say "create a verbal expression of x + y = 12,"

 

you might say "Abby has some jelly beans, and Gabby also has some jelly beans. Together they have 12 jelly beans."

 

Or if the equation was "x + 7 = 12," you could write, "Abby has some jelly beans, and Gabby has 7 jelly beans. If they have 12 jelly beans together, how many does Abby have?"

 

(Hey, why does Gabby get more jelly beans?!?)

This question isn't clear. A "verbal expression" just means a string of words, a phrase or a sentence. Do they want you to just put the equation into words? Can you find any examples in your notes or workbook? Or at least, give us the exact question on your assignment. Without something else to go by, I don't know if anyone will know how to help you.
