Anne,
Observe that the sequence is decreasing by 1 1/4 each time.
so
7 1/2 - 1 1/4 = 6 1/4
and
6 1/4 - 1 1/4 = 5
therefore next in the sequence is
5 - 1 1/4 = ?
and so on and so on!

The only thing I might have added was the next two or three answers in the sequence:
7.5, 6.25, 5, 3.75, 2.5, 1.25, ...
