Qualifications for “ACT Science”

Having finished five semesters of teaching an ACT prep class at a private school in Plano, I have had plenty of experience in showing students how to tackle the science section of the ACT test. The science section is not so much a science test as a reading comprehension/do you know how to interpret charts and graphs kind of test. Allow me to help you to be bold, to be thoroughly unintimidated, and to conquer the ACT science section!

As Valedictorian of my high school class and a Cum Laude graduate of Texas A&M University, I have a record of excellence in education. With a BA degree in English and a minor in accounting, I have a passion for all things English and all things math. For several years, I have honed my tutoring skills in three areas: English, mathematics, and test prep. I am an expert in the English language (reading comprehension, writing, grammar, and phonics), and I love math. For several years, I taught an ACT test prep class, and I have tutored numerous students to prepare them for taking the ACT, SAT, ISEE, GMAT, and PSAT. I have the ability to prepare my students for not only the English sections of these tests, but also the math sections as well. I have tutored kids in every level of math from kindergarten counting to trigonometry. I have imparted my love of learning and my test-taking abilities to my students whom I have tutored for the last 20 years. From helping a 2nd grader progress in reading fluency to providing a 7th grader with foundational reading comprehension or algebra skills to acting as an ACT tutor for a high school senior hoping to raise his score a few points, I have enjoyed sharing with others the knowledge I have. I look forward to helping you or your child progress to the next level of academic excellence.

I have enjoyed tutoring Japanese and Chinese students, adults and children, from professionals to elementary age. Using English curriculum tailored to the student, I evaluate a student's level quickly and assign writing homework. Prompted by Ted Talks and current events, my older students and I engage in dialogue, and I offer instant friendly feedback and corrections. With special attention to my client's particular needs, I focus on conversational skills, reading comprehension, grammar, writing, and even phonics, if necessary.

Achieving National Merit Semi-finalist status, National Merit Finalist status and a perfect score on the English ACT section - as my students have done - are easier feats when you know your grammar. With a thorough foundation in parts of speech, sentence structure, and punctuation, a student can excel in communication. Because every career requires excellence in verbal correspondence, it makes sense to hone this skill. I have two different curriculums that I use to reinforce grammar concepts that enhance writing ability.

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored elementary school children for thirteen years in a wide variety of subjects. I have taught children how to read using an extensive phonics curriculum. Additionally, I have tutored in grammar, writing (including book reports), and literature. I have taught math from simple counting to pre-algebra. I have tutored in social science, American history, and world geography.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

Over the past twenty years, I have taught every level of math from kindergarten through sixth grade. I employ Saxon math curriculum strengths including speed drills and frequent review of concepts. Setting the foundation for a lifetime of use, elementary math mastery is a must. So many students have suffered learning loss in these unprecedented and widely varying circumstances; it is so important to find and fill those math gaps; let me help your child get back on track!

Homeschool

I spent 20 years homeschooling my two sons and one daughter. I taught each of them how to read by age 3 using the ABeka phonics program. I taught each of them every subject from kindergarten through 6th grade, and I then managed their courses from 7th grade through 12th grade (at home, ABeka DVDs, dual credit, and co-op classes). My three children have achieved a graduate degree in cyber security, Texas Army National Guard, and National Merit Finalist status. I have extensive experience in using ABeka curriculum, using Saxon math curriculum, creating high school transcripts, enrolling students in dual credit classes, enrolling students in homeschooling co-op classes, and helping my children apply to and be accepted by major universities such as Texas A&M University, UTD, and OU.
Phonics,

Phonics

I have personally taught 3 children how to read by the age of 3 by starting out with the Dr. Seuss ABC book. Then, after the child can identify and pronounce letters, I move on to a comprehensive phonics program that utilizes flash cards, letter blends, colorful pictures, and short books for every level of beginning reader. Do you remember or have you heard of the old "Dick and Jane" readers that we grew up with decades ago? Well, those books are not phonics based! Notice that the title itself includes a more complicated "ck" blend and a long vowel. I do not subscribe to a whole-language approach that produces weak readers; I am a firm believer in a phonics-based approach to learning how to read!
Reading,

Reading

Reading comprehension is arguably one of the most important skills a child can master. You cannot solve a word problem without the ability to read and comprehend what is being asked of you. You cannot even begin an assignment if you cannot understand the directions at the top of the page. Not only have I literally taught three children to read by the age of three (using phonics), but I have helped countless students hone their reading comprehension skills. Whether it is ACT, SAT, 7th grade English class, or 4th grade literature, it is all about the evidence in the passage, as well as a breadth of vocabulary skills.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

I have spent the last 15 years helping students with their study skills. Studying for tests and completing homework occurs most successfully when several factors are in place. First, the study space needs to be visually and orally clutter free. In other words, television, your favorite DJ, five texting/face booking friends, and trash on the table are not conducive to a positive study environment. Secondly, the mind needs to be clutter free. Anxiety about yesterday's argument with a friend can truly hinder anyone's ability to accomplish tasks. Consequently, I encourage the student to identify the source of worrying and either eliminate it quickly, if possible, or assign a concrete time in the future to address the issue. Then, I encourage the student to focus on the academic task at hand. Finally, because procrastination is often a problem due to a sense of being overwhelmed with a big project or research paper, I help students break big assignments into manageable pieces. Calendars are crucial to helping students set mini-deadlines in order to meet the final due-date.

Vocabulary

Andrew Pudewa, creator of the Institute for Excellence in Writing Curriculum, once said, "You cannot think thoughts that you don't have the vocabulary for." Although you may have incredible ideas, if you do not have the verbal tools to communicate them, your ideas remain invisible. Having seen again and again high school seniors unable to comprehend an SAT 19th century speech or prose passage, I am determined to tackle this lack of vocabulary prowess. Dedicated to your student's improvement in reading comprehension and writing, I use a vocabulary curriculum with sentence completion exercises and memorization of roots, prefixes, and suffixes. I also use reading comprehension passages with 10 question quizzes. My students think critically because they gain the verbal skills to do so.

A few years later, I tutored her brother who had also taken my class, and he got a 34 on the English section, matching the 34 that another one of my students received on the English section. Let me help your teen by explaining the several kinds of questions that show up on the English section without fail – totally recognizable and easily answered.

I have tutored numerous students in literature - everything from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice to Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 to J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Emphasizing literary analysis, annotation, and literary devices including similes, metaphors, personification, alliteration, literary allusions, and more, I help students understand vocabulary, plot, and themes. SAT Writing

Recently, one of my students happened to miss an SAT Writing and Language question because she got distracted. She tried to poetically match the verbal content of the line reference and the answer choices, rather than noticing that two of the answer choices included slang diction. I pointed out to her that the question tested the understanding of a formal, professional tone versus a casual one. I help my students improve their scores in this SAT section by gaining the ability to understand the question type - a skill which allows students to quickly identify the correct answer.

I have tutored students for the last 15 years in social studies, from Kindergarten through 8th grade. I have taught and reviewed with children a wide variety of topics regarding countries, cultures, and current events. From every U. S. state and capital to Canadian provinces to European bodies of water, I have engaged students in the wonders of the globe! I love maps, I love geography, and I love current events; and I have imparted that love of social studies knowledge to my students. I may not be able to draw free-handed the map of the U. S. with all of its states like my Dad can, but I can label every state and capital and more besides! I believe that children should possess a certain body of knowledge as a foundation; I have contributed a portion of that store of knowledge to children by helping them learn and retain social studies facts.

Writing,

Writing

From winner of a middle school essay contest to achiever of a perfect score on the ACT English section to a National Merit finalist, my students have excelled in writing, communication, and grammar arenas. The ability to communicate is a vital skill, no matter the college preferred or the career pursued: your student needs to be able to write. Having tutored numerous students in writing, I enjoy sharing a proven, simple progression of lessons that starts with a simple paragraph and moves through many genres including informative, narrative, and persuasive essays. I include a focus on vocabulary and grammar as well.

Test Preparation

ACT English,

ACT English

After several weeks of taking my ACT prep class, my student improved her official score in English to a perfect score of 36. A few years later, I tutored her brother who had also taken my class, and he got a 34 on the English section, matching the 34 that another one of my students received on the English section. Let me help your teen by explaining the several kinds of questions that show up on the English section without fail – totally recognizable and easily answered.
ACT Math,

ACT Math

As Valedictorian of my high school class, I excelled in math, receiving A's in every math class through Calculus. My minor from Texas A&M University (1991, Cum Laude) is in Accounting. I love working with numbers! I have tutored in ACT Math and SAT math, as well as arithmetic through Algebra 1, and I have helped students with strategies to score more points. In fact, the mom of one of my students just texted me to let me know that her son "raised his score enough to get the next scholarship level from his college after tutoring with (me)." Her message underscores the importance I place on getting that next problem correct - banking another point. I treat each problem as a mini-puzzle that many times should be solved creatively in order to be solved more quickly. Encouraging my students to succeed while empowering them to do so through concrete knowledge and strategy is my specialty.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English (Cum Laude) from Texas A&M University. For the last 20 years, I have tutored students in English grammar, reading, writing, and literature. For several semesters, I have taught an ACT Prep Class at a private school in Plano. For the reading section of the ACT test, I emphasize finding the evidence for the answers. I discuss strategies such as timing and recognizing trends in test answers.
ACT Science,

ACT Science

Having finished five semesters of teaching an ACT prep class at a private school in Plano, I have had plenty of experience in showing students how to tackle the science section of the ACT test. The science section is not so much a science test as a reading comprehension/do you know how to interpret charts and graphs kind of test. Allow me to help you to be bold, to be thoroughly unintimidated, and to conquer the ACT science section!
ISEE,

ISEE

Having a degree in English (B.A. Cum Laude) from Texas A&M University, I enjoy helping students prepare for reading and math standardized tests. I have tutored students to help them prepare for the upper level ISEE test in order to get into the private school they have chosen. I help students in verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, and essay writing. Additionally, I explain the unique testing format of the math sections of the ISEE test as a part of the math prep. Focusing on general test-taking strategies helps my students as well.
SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

I am in my 6th semester of teaching a college entrance exam prep class at a private school in the Dallas area. I have also tutored numerous students who are wanting to improve their test scores. I enjoy showing my students how to tackle reading passages. Timing is important. Knowing the mindset of your test writer is important. Paying attention to details and understanding that there truly is only one correct answer is crucial to gaining more points.
SAT Writing,

STAAR,

STAAR

Having a degree in English (B.A. Cum Laude) from Texas A&M University, I enjoy helping students prepare for reading and writing standardized tests. I have tutored students in preparing for the STAAR tests in elementary and middle school grades. I have helped students in reading comprehension, identification of writing errors, and essay writing. Utilizing past STAAR writing prompts, I give students writing assignments, and then I help them edit their papers. I help them find evidence in passages to support their answers to reading comprehension questions. Focusing on grammar rules and general test-taking strategies helps my students as well.

Very thorough

My 7th grader said she is very thorough and good at explaining the concept. She spent enough time to go over the concept so that he fully understand. Then, practice. Thank you

Highly rec Laura - test prep strategy

My son had a fabulous session with Laura. We chose in person, but she does offer online. She's very knowledgeable, patient, kind and a clear/concise communicator. No minutes were wasted and my son and I both saw the value of the session. I wish we could do many, many sessions with her. We will be able to do a few more test strategy prep sessions before he takes SAT and ACT. I'm super grateful to have found Laura.

Wonderful Tutor

We have been tutoring with Laura for several years, with a long break in between the private school decision process. We started tutoring again this summer, and she continues to be an invaluable teacher and incredible motivator for our 12-year old son. It’s truly a perfect match for our son who’s easily distracted and at times not motivated to learn outside of school. He truly enjoys Laura’s teaching style and personality so he is always engaged and learning.

Relaxed, patient, and extremely helpful

Laura is helping my son quickly prepare for the ACT, specifically where he struggles the most, which is getting through the math section in time. She's teaching him to slow down, read the question thoroughly, and to look for the actual question they are asking - which isn't always to solve for X. She is also teaching him test taking strategies to make sure he gets through the answers as efficiently as possible, in all areas of the test. We are SO grateful to have found her!

Wonderful Tutor

We have been tutoring with Laura since last year, with a long break in between the private school decision process. We started tutoring again this summer, and she continues to be an invaluable teacher and incredible motivator for our 11-year old son. Amazing she can keep him engaged without school going on and an easily distracted personality.
