Qualifications for “algebra”

Due to popular demand, I began tutoring algebra I in the fall of 2014. I usually tutor this subject in combination with one of my core subjects, biology or chemistry. There is a lot algebra in genetics and chemistry, so while I am still new at tutoring math, there is a lot of overlap between math and the subjects that I tutor most frequently.

I earned a PhD in neuroscience (Northwestern University, 2009), and I have ten years of research experience. My areas of expertise are molecular biology, genetics, neuroscience, and general chemistry. I majored in chemistry in college and love the challenge of that subject. I've taught and worked with students at many levels, including high school, undergraduate, graduate, and medical students. Working with students one-on-one or in small groups is my favorite way to teach. I'm an incredibly versatile tutor and find it easy to adjust my style and pacing to fit a student's needs.

I have a passion for writing and good communication. I have honed my writing skills in a variety of media, including science publications, presentations, blogging, and grant-writing. If you'd like to improve your non-fiction writing skills, I'd love to work with you.

My teaching philosophy is that a good teacher helps a student learn how to teach herself. In a technologically advanced society such as ours, scientific literacy is an essential skill for making informed decisions. I strive to inspire and demonstrate scientific literacy and lifelong learning.

Writing

I work with PhD students and science PhDs to help them improve their technical writing. I understand the importance of clear, concise writing to communicate technical ideas. My goal is to help students develop their own writing style in polished, professional English. I focus on the deep structure and logical underpinnings of technical writing to illustrate how an argument is made using theory and data. I also walk students through the small details that can be difficult to master, such as use of articles and pronouns in English. My tutoring sessions make use of published pieces and my students' in-progress manuscripts.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I've tutored dozens of students in algebra 2 material. I also frequently cover this material for students taking other classes, such as college chemistry or SAT/ACT preparation. I teach my students how to recognize when to use specific techniques as well as how to execute those techniques with precision.
Biology,

Biology

Biology is a popular tutoring subject for me. I have tutored students in general, cell, and molecular biology. I also frequently work with genetics students. I have even tutored a graduate student in nutrition! I have a PhD in biology (neuroscience with a focus on molecular biology, genetics, and behavior) and ten years of research experience. My undergraduate major was in biochemistry, including several biology classes. I am very comfortable teaching students theory and practical application of biology.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

I tutor students in general chemistry at the high school and college levels. I'm skilled at explaining the theory and application of chemistry. I offer a bridge between ideas (theory) and the problems that chemistry students must solve (application). I frequently work with high school students who are taking pre-AP chemistry. I have some experience working with students who are taking CHEM301 and CHEM302 at the University of Texas here in Austin. I majored in chemistry in college and have been tutoring students in general chemistry since March 2014. I am also building a library of great chemistry study resources and can offer these resources to my students. My library includes practice questions, several textbooks, on-line lessons, and on-line lectures.
Geometry,

Geometry

Due to popular request, I recently began tutoring students in geometry. Generally, I teach geometry along with one of my core subjects, chemistry or biology. I enjoy geometry very much and look forward to working with more students in this subject. Currently I am building my own library of study materials and practice problems, and I'm happy to create worksheets to help my students work on their geometry skills.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

As an SAT math tutor, I specialize in helping students review content and identify strategies and shortcuts that will allow them to solve problems methodically. I have worked with several students on comprehensive SAT math. I am especially well-versed in teaching the geometry and probability problems. In my view, the most important strategy to use on the SAT math sections is to maximize the number of questions answered correctly. To that end, I think the best test strategy is to not rush but to identify the problems that can be solved most easily. After the "easy" problems are done, I encourage my students to tackle more time-consuming problems, with the caveat that an educated or "estimated" guess is better than no answer at all.

Brilliant and Thorough

OMG Dr. M. is AAAAWWWWEEEESOME!!! If you are struggling with genetics, she is it!! Besides the fact that she is a genius, she is very patient, super sweet, has ridiculously neat handwriting, she explains confusing concepts VERY CLEAR. She breaks it down into simple English language because all college genetics textbooks are written by martians. Genetics no doubt is a challenging course, but if you have Dr. M. in your corner, you will build the confidence and skills to overcome the hurdle! No doubt about it, even for dummies like me...She genuinely cares about the success of her students. I was so distraught because I had an exam and desperately needed her wisdom and guidance, but knew she was not available. Without any hesitation, Dr. M. made time for me on her day off to review the exam material. Even if I have questions with my homework, I can always email her for help. Her dedication to students is priceless. She will go the extra mile to insure your success!

Excellent genetics tutor!!

Rose-Anne did an excellent job tutoring genetics to my daughter who was taking this college course over the summer. Rose-Anne really knows genetics! She helped my daughter with 6 hours of tutoring over a week, the results were that my daughter understood genetics and earned an A on her final!!! We hired Rose-Anne to help my daughter because prior to Rose-Anne's help she was making Ds and Cs and really struggling with genetics.

Fantastic Excel Tutor!!!

I highly recommend Rose-Anne as an Excel and overall tutor within her specialties. Excel has been very difficult for me to utilize over the years with a need to improve my proficiency with the tool. Rose-Anne was very patient with me as I need to review many basic functions. She is incredibly knowledgeable on Excel and everything related to it. She also helped me in a lot of other areas including math and utilizing power-point. I HIGHLY recommend her!!! She is a gifted teacher and anybody who can work with her will truly benefit. Thanks, Rose-Anne!!!
