I am a certified teacher in 4 areas: Math, Science, Social Studies and Business Technology. I have a undergraduate degree from Northwestern University in Illinois and a MBA in Finance from Temple University. I have been teaching in Philadelphia for the past eight years in both Math and Science, with a little technology thrown in through my work with the robotics team at the high school. I have taught Algebra 1, Statistics and PreCalculus - but my true love is Geometry. In Science, I have taught Physical Science, Earth Science, Environmental Science and Astronomy. And, yes, I have my own telescope!
I have tutored in the Elkins Park area for over ten years, primarily in middle school and high school mathematics. In addition to the subject areas I teach, I like to concentrate with all my students on finding the right set of skills and study habits to meet their goals. With the emphasis on testing in schools today, I work on how to reduce the stress of test-taking. My students tell me that they "like" math and science better after woking with me. I believe that change in attitude, and a bit of work, can make all the difference!
I truly enjoy working with students one-on one. There is nothing more satisfying than helping a young person conquer a concept that they found challenging.

Elementary Education

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

My certifications in middle school and high school mathematics make me uniquely qualified to help students understand the basic skills required for each step of their journey to the higher levels of mathematics. As both a mother and an educator, I have witnessed as children have struggled and conquered discreet skill sets necessary to move forward in math. As each new skill is mastered, the confidence and energy to grow increases.
Elementary Science

Elementary Science

From the "science club" that my husband and I created for our children and their friends to the high school classes I have taught in the city of Philadelphia, my experience shows that children have a natural curiosity about the world around them. Concepts that seem difficult, when broken down and connected to the real world, just become part of a puzzle to solve - a game, not a chore. Experimentation and trial and error are the basis for creative thinking skills so necessary in our world today. Vocabulary and memory skills are some of the keys to opening this intriguing Earth.

Algebra 1

Certified middle and high school Math teacher. I have tutored in Algebra for over 10 years using multiple resources and strategies to aid my students' efforts.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have an MBA in Finance and have taught math and science at the HS level in Philadelphia for the past 8 years. In addition, I have been tutoring math for over 10 years. The topics covered in Algebra 2 can be complex. This level is often an area where even good math students may feel overwhelmed. I focus on teaching the basic concepts and their connections to previous skills to assist my students in moving forward with confidence.
Geometry,

Geometry

I have tutored in Geometry for over 10 years and of all the topics in math it is my favorite! I use the concepts of structure and logic that are the foundations of Geometry to show the beauty of this field. Geometry is about spatial relationships and can be taught in cross-over areas such as architecture and design. Seeing and understanding how things fit together is one of the coolest things about all math.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I am a certified middle and high school teacher in the following subjects: math, science, social studies, and business and technology. I taught for eight years in the Philadelphia Public School System, and have been tutoring for even longer. I work hard to help students achieve and become more confident in their own ability.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I only taught PreCalc one year at the high school level, but have tutored several students over the years. Depending on the level of Algebra 2 instruction that a student received, precalc may feel like a logical progression or it may feel like you have just landed on the moon. The key is to tie the topic back to the basics, and to move it forward using its connections to real world problems.

Science

Astronomy,

Astronomy

I have always been fascinated by the stars. I had the great good luck to be able to teach Astronomy at the high school level to very enthusiastic students. The subject matter is comprised of many basic concepts in chemistry and physics. While the science can be complex, the joy of the universe is a pretty substantial reward!
Physical Science

I have taught Physical Science and various other Science courses for the last eight years. For students that are not naturally drawn to science, I have found many ways to pique their interest and turn them into avid explorers of the world around them!

Great first lesson

Gloria and I connected for the first time on 10/21. After a brief conversation we arranged for her to come out that night to meet my daughter for her first tutoring session. They reviewed the Geometry lesson my daughter is currently studying and went through her homework and past quizzes she did not do so well on. After the lesson, my daughter felt more confident and knows exactly what she needs to work on. We've already scheduled another session for this Thursday as my daughter has a test on Friday and would like Gloria to help her prepare for the test.

First session a success

My daughter took to Gloria's patient teaching style quickly. The first session went really well and my daughter who was struggling and saying that she just can't understand geometry is now saying "I can do this." I look forward to continued progress and increased confidence.
