#### what is an equation equal of a line parallel to y=2/3x-4 and goes through the point (6,7)

i cant figure it out

+ more- less
Asked by Heather from Beacon Falls, CT

Hello Heather,

For a line to be parallel it must have the same slope as another line therefore:

y = mx +b translated from your data would be

(1) y = 2/3x + b

now we know if x =  6 then y = 7, so solve for the intercept this way

7 = 2/3(6) + b

Then substitute b in the original equation (1)

Once you have the equation of the new line then confirm that (6,7) is a point by substitution as I have done this already. You can plot both lines to be sure but they will be parallel.

The interesting notion about this question is that it almost makes you think that both lines have the point (6,7) common but that is not the case.

Hope this helps!!

#### what is 2x+3=x

show the steps to this

+ more- less
Asked by Mary from Lexington, KY
10

Mary,

2x +3 = x

You want to get like terms on each side of the equation so subtract x from each side to get

2x - x + 3 = x - x

simplify to get

x+3 = 0

then subtract 3 from each side

x + 3 - 3 = -3

so x = -3

now plug this value back in to the equation to check it.

Hope that helps!

#### can u help complete the following sequence

can you help complete the following sequence

7.5, 6.25, 5

i dont  understand i dont get it

+ more- less
Asked by Anne from Corona, CA

Anne,

Observe that the sequence is decreasing by 1 1/4 each time.

so

7 1/2 - 1 1/4 = 6 1/4

and

6 1/4 - 1 1/4 = 5

therefore next in the sequence is

5 - 1 1/4 = ?

and so on and so on!

Hope that helps!

#### Write two expressions you could use to find the area of a square figure

Write two expressions  you could use to find the area of each square figure

+ more- less
Asked by Ollie from Aurora, IL

Ollie,

I suppose s= the side of a square figure so

Asquare= s * s = s2

also

since a square is really two right triangles together when a diagonal is drawn then

the area of one triangle is

Atriangle = 1/2bh where b=the base and h= the height

so the area of the square is

Asqare = 2*(1/2)bh = bh

Hope that helps!

#### z+7/8 = z+8/9

Solve z+7  = z+8

8          9

+ more- less
Asked by Mitze from Collinsville, TX
10

Mitze,

If the equation is (z+7)/8 = (z+8)/9 it does have a solution!

First we multiply each side by 9 to get

9(z+7)/8 = z+8

then we multiply each side by 8 to get

9(z+7) = 8(z+8)

simplify

9z + 63 = 8z +64

subtract 8z form each side to get

z + 63 = 64 and finalyy subtract 63 from each side

z= 64-63=1

so z= 1

Plug it back in the original equation

(z+7)/8 = (z+8)/9

so

(1+7)/8 = (1+8)/9

and

8/8 = 9/9 = 1

so z=1

Hope that helps!
