Hi, I taught middle school and high school for ten years before completing my doctoral research. My secondary school teaching was honored by Stanford University, and every semester I've taught at Harvard I've earned University distinction for top-rated courses. As both a middle/high school teacher and now a social cognitive neuroscientist in the Harvard Psych Dept., I have taken special pride in teaching "good thinking through good writing." I believe strongly that all students can develop their intellect -- it takes deliberate practice! The good news is that I'm good at breaking down complex ideas into bite-size pieces that I can teach you directly. And on the other hand, I can help you build discrete skills to ultimately develop truly interesting ideas, whether in literary analysis or scientific inquiry.

Regarding test-taking, I can efficiently teach you all sections of the SAT, GRE and other exams. Graders of the writing sections of these tests read the essays very quickly; I can quickly show you what kinds of writing stands out and makes a positive impression. In the multiple choice sections, I can show you how to read questions precisely and use your time well. I can also efficiently teach the skills and knowledge you'll be tested on.

FYI, I'm also a coffee lover, and I'll never present myself to you in an under-caffeinated state! Thus you should be prepared for high-energy, good-humored times. But don't doubt that I will maintain a very tight focus on your work!

Grammar

I grew up with a wonderful mom who made terms like "restrictive appositive" dinner-table conversation! Not everyone needs (or wants!) to know the technical terms of important grammar rules. But I taught grammar and writing to middle school students for ten years, so I became good at explaining the technical rules in simple, even intuitive ways. I genuinely believe that clearing up your grammar helps you not just communicate effectively, but it even helps you THINK more effectively!

Microsoft Excel

Excel can be your best friend or it can truly drive you crazy. Most people use just its basics and don't take advantage of Excel's capacities to automate very many of the tasks you do over and over. I can efficiently teach you everything from ways to reduce the number of keystrokes you use, to intermediate and advanced use of formulas, to making really clear, informative and cool-looking charts.

Microsoft PowerPoint

It doesn't take too much to take basic PowerPoint skills to an intermediate or advanced level. Some people want to learn how to use animations and embed videos. Others just want to make their text and data crisper and more striking. An investment of a couple of hours will help you avoid the dreaded PowerPoint slides that have too much text crushed together. A few pointers on basic layout skills also helps you understand how to make certain parts stand out.

Writing

I love teaching writing, both creative and analytical. I cannot say enough: good writing is good thinking! In my work, I use SPSS to run t-tests, ANOVA and regression. These are the tools most people will use, but so much of what makes SPSS a great program involves tricks that help you organize your data spreadsheet. I enjoy teaching statistics itself, and also how to interact with SPSS.

SAT Reading

In my view, too many tutors focus on "test-taking skills." These will, indeed, help one gain a few points on the SAT, but I really focus on the knowledge itself. I've been using a Mac since 1989! I had the original one-piece "fishbowl" design. I've had a Mac ever since and, as do many Mac enthusiasts/nerds, I consider my Mac a part of the family!
